Posts: 2091 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Well, how did everyone do today? Lambeau and I fished the Pete and only saw one fish. It was a low to mid 30's that took a good swipe at my Topraider right at boatside when I was going into my figure eight, only problem was the fish forgot to open it's mouth and slammed my bait with it's nose and the fish came half way out of the water. I did manage to boat a very hefty 19" Largemouth on a Slippery Sam Jr. Weather conditions were very cloudy, raining when we hit the water around 0700 and we took a beating on the main lake especially in the afternoon with a stiff wind. The new Tuffy rocked though on the big water. Fun day on the water with Lambeau, thanks again for letting me tag along. Pictures to follow from today from Lambeau.

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | Its a tradition for Todd Forcier and I to hit the Wisconsin River on Opening Day and we kept the streak alive. Last year it took a half dozen casts for Todd to put me on my first fish of 2006... and it took only 5 casts in 2007! Thanks Todd Blade Baits were the ticket for us... with my two fish eating Long Tale Spinnerbaits and Todd's fish chomping on a bucktail. No surprise patterns... current and banks as usual... but all three fish came on NEW spots for us... which was nice. Its always a pleasure to fish with Todd. He has superb boat control skills and its a real joy to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Sometimes I think he's a magician the way he can hold a boat on a current seem with a strong cross-wind. And... his new Johnboat rocks! It was fun breaking in his new toy and gettin' some musky slime in it. Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Good job dudes! My schedule dictates that I work opener each year...UGGH! I try to get out for a few casts though, just to get rid of the jitters. Fun getting to finnally put the spinning rod and bass tubes down. Great to catch an unexpected first Musky of the year too, but sucks to not know the name of the lure you were using. Now that it works, I cannot find more and don't even know if more are being made. Rob Peterson made it and traded it to me for an old tackle box a couple years ago. It is a small crank/twitch bait with great pause and slow rise. Wish I could get a couple more now. Edited by Reef Hawg 5/6/2007 7:24 AM

Posts: 1438 | I finally got to stick a fish on the opener. 37" on about cast number 6 using a Firetiger Bassnatcher by Hawgseekers. Unfortunately, that was the only musky for the day. I got a small bass and Curly stuck 2 about 3 pounds. Good to be on the water again. Even Sluggo was out... the house is just about done. Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Had one long opening day! Started out at 12 am. Fished a few spots, might have hooked and lost a fish, but wasnt totally sure. Fished till about 2. Got back to my room and got all my trout stuff all set up and in place to head out the door at 3 45. Layed down in bedd at about 2 45, turned on the tv and fell asleep around 3. At 3 45 the alarm went off much to my disliking, but the thoughts of the fishing to come got me up. Picked up all my buddies going trout fishing with me and we were on the way. Reached the spot we were going to fish at 5 am. About 5 minutes into the fishing I managed to tear the crotch out of my waders.....which were supposed to be the temporary replacements to the pair that I put a whole in last week. I tried not getting too bent out of shape and just enjoyed the fishing. After about 2 hours we had 6 keeper brook trout. The plan was to head to Gander to pick up another pair of waders so I could musky fish the rest of the day, but upon arrival we discoverd they did not open till 9 am. We couldnt just sit and wait for them to open since my roommate needed to get back and go to work. After dropping everyone off the temptation to take a nap, but I kept the waders on, grabbed all the musky gear and headed out to my spot. Half way to the spot, fellow MuskyFirster A-ROZ called me and told me he had no where to fish. I told him to grab some waders and come down to Point. He did just that. I fished for a while since I had 2 hours until he got there, but had no luck. Got out of the river and went to my buddies house and we hooked up the boat, picked up A-ROZ and headed back to the river, dropped the boat in and headed up river to our spot. After a couple of hours A-ROZ stuck a nice 38.5 or 39 inch fish. The fish was a little beat up and had a nice gouge in its side. A few pictures were taken and the fish was released. After releaseing it we started wandering down river where I stuck a 19 inch Smallmouth. No other action from muskies though. Then we headed back, got the boat and got off the water. Got back to my room at about 7 45 just exhausted. Fell asleep about as fast as I could get my waders off and didnt wake up till 10 am. Today Becky and I headed back out trout fishing, as I was relatively certain she would get into fish which would keep her interested in fishing for part of the day. We did real well and bot caught our limit of trout. Still looking for that musky though! Hopefully this week sometime!

had a blast with MuskieMedic scouting some (new to me) areas on Petenwell. it was good to get some confirmation with the fish blowing up boatside, and the nice largemouth that Derek caught...if you look close you might be able to see the red all over his hands from the line. if you haven't tried the Lure for lunch and a brew, you're missing out. my buddy Justin was chasing us all day in his boat, he had to put up with a bit rougher ride than we had in the 1890, but that boat of his practically flies. 50mph in an Esox Magnum on Petenwell in heavy crosswinds? he's braver than me too! btw, if you try hard enough, you can get waves into an 1890. but it takes some doing. yee-haw. Posts: 427 Location: Wausau | We hit Petenwell and had fun with the wind as well. Maybe someone with more river experience can answer this question - the wind blown west/northwest bays were 2-3 degrees colder than the nonwind river edge? Anyway, boat partner caught a beat up 38 and that was the extent of our action. Attachments ---------------- Hager 38 Petenwell 2.jpg (121KB - 83 downloads)

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | It sure was great being back on the water again. We fished all day on Saturday and raised 11. All but three were undersized. I caught a nice smallie. On Sunday we fished until noon. I lost a 40" at the boat. Most all the action was on either a Red Dragon or Bluegill Slammer Drop Belly Glider. Most everything was in under 4' of water. Pewaukee was rockin' and rollin' with major easterly winds, but it still was great to be out! Water temperatures were 51-52.

Posts: 5874 | Nice fish all you guys. I had a great opener. Great food, freinds, beer, boats, and fish! I spent a great opening day with Eric, Casey, and Shawn. Glad to share my new Tuffy with you all. That grin on Casey's face after he caught that fish on the 8 was classic. I bet it's still just as wide! That fish was cool. Skinny water, explode out of the water right next to the boat, barrel roll into the net, crazy fish! Beat up like that, hardly a tail, and she still had power to spare. That was fun. JoMusky spent the second morning fishing with me. I laughed alot, but not after he had to tighten one of my starter battery cables! Thanks to Jason Smith for almost rescuing us. hehehe JJ, that is one beaut! That was one of Kyle's favorite spots. Shop it all you want, that spot will have great memories for me as long as I live. Theedz! Great job. Glad you could get out on the opener afterall. Mark, why did you put the hat on that bass? hehehe JLong and Todd, great job. I spent a day with Todd earlier this year fishing for eyes. This guy has some great knowledge of the Pete. I had an awesome day. I will get out with him for ski's on that body. But not before he comes this way for a day or two. I hope Shawn is cooking again next year. Thanks kevin for setting it up, and John at Smokies for hosting the event.

Posts: 284 | Raised 3 fish on Saturday hooked 1. One followed a 6" kick'n minnow and 2 following the sucker hanging off the back. Had one on a bucktail but almost jumped in the boat and spit the hook. The first fish was just swimming right behind the sucker for about 1 minute. had it hanging 5 feet form the boat and it just stayed there inches from the sucker following at the same speed as the boat right behind it. Spead the boat up nothing slowed boat down nothing. He was about a 3 footer all scarred up with spawning marks. Then despite our attempts to waive him off this tool of a DNR agent pulls right up beside our boat to check licenses jackets and the livewell. Pretty much pissed me off pretty well. Then later another 3 footer came up and saw the boat took off. This fish was real green though and was sure coming in a hurry. The fish we hooked was probably mid 40's and beautiful but I hadn't put the net together earlier and she came straight at the boat almost jumped in and spit the hook. Nothing will make you curse more. Every fish we saw was when the sun came out for the short periods of time that it did when the clouds came back nothing, and again started seeing fish when we got sun. Two lessons learned here. Have the net ready always, and keep the sucker a little farther off the stern (if you only got one)
