Location: Medford, WI | Seeing all of your other paintjobs, I expect this to be one of the best looking and producing baits out there. No doub this thing will look just like a sucker...(Well a sucker that has 2 breaks in it's back-bone at least.)

Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | Thanks. I've been dreaming of the day I made this particular model since I first saw small lipless swimbaits that were being produced in Japan. I have a picture in my head of how it will look and swim and with any luck it will work out as planned.
I'll post pics and a video of it completed soon. I'm also working on the custom Bluegill that I'm collaborating on with Tigger to donate to MuskieFirst. Let's get paired up guys and make this happen. |

You are correct sir! I use zinc plated hinges that are held in place with two galvanized roofing nails through each one like pins. Then they are also glued then sealed with epoxy. I would have just used screw eyes but it's tough doing doubles in such a tight space. I like my baits to be beefy so the hinges should last through some tough fishing. |

Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | Thanks Duff. I'm just a guy that enjoys what he does and I enjoy sharing some of my tips and experience when I can. So many folks get too carried away with the anonymity of the internet and I'm trying to put a face and some history to my name. We sometimes forget that there are real people with real feelings when we comment on forums. I'm all for recieving critisisms or negative comments as long as the person logs in and is accountable for what they say and can explain themselves.
When you think about it, it's pretty incrdible to have the opportunity to showcase our baits for free like this. Let's get those custom donation baits going guys!!!

Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | Yes they will. I've gone back to carving at least the part of the gills that exposes the red gill rakers underneath. The only reason I had stopped doing it was that after clear coating them several times, most of the detailing would be filled in with epoxy and the same effect could be gotten by painting them to look carved.
I do prefer the look of the carved gills though. The baits have always had the carved mouths on them.
Some people actually prefer the older thicker baits to the lighter ones. The actions are the same but there's something kinda cool about tossing a big old piece of lumber at a big fish!!! |

Location: Omaha, Nebraska | I am one of those persons that prefers your older baits to your lighter baits. I was a little dissapointed when you said that you were no longer carving the gills. I like the look of hand carved gills. I think the carved gills make them look more unique and custom. Keep up the great work Mike! You are always improving. I can't to see some paint on that swimbait.

Location: The desert | Hey Mike....That thing looks pretty cool! Good to hear the gill are going to be carved in there. I know I was a fan of the thicker model, especially on the walleye, but everything you make is very very impressive!
By the way.....the red part is the gill fillament, not the rakers, you'd have to really flare out your gill slits in order to see the rakers as they are on the inside of the gill arches...lol! keep up the good work. |

Your work is amazing Snax, and it's baits like that which is the reason I want to start making my own. (Not that I can do something that good, but gotta start somewhere) I just started painting some baits last week and am doing a few more tonight. May be a while before I get to the lure-making part of it, but I will sometime. In the meantime thanks for always posting pics!

I actually used my Iwata Eclipse Hp- BS budget model for painting this one up but thank you John. The Custom Micron does indeed allow for much finer control of fine lines and dots etc but I didn't need it for this particular one.
I do see a lot of room for improvement on this Sucker though. I think I will do the lower anal fin with wood like the dorsal then just paint on the others. The orange fins are distracting and was something I wanted to try out.
There are also some subtle nuances with the paint that I could have done that I won't get into but I see little things to improve upon. I'm never one to be satisfied with something if i know I could have done a better job. The more I do this the more I see that the subtle things can have the biggest impact.

Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | On this prototype the fins are made from a very tear resistant fabric. Not exactly sure what it is but I couldn't tear it with my fingers. They are epoxied right into the sides of the bait with just the very bottoms sticking free ecept for the anal fin which I am going to do in wood on the next version. I airbrushed shadows to make them look like they are sticking out from the body more than they really are. This particular bait is still in its final tweaking stage but I thought some of you might like to see how it comes along. I'm enjoying fiddling with it now that I have the basic idea down.
