HI, anybody been on the big V lately. I'm thinking about heading up there later this week and I was wondering what people were using to catch fish up there this time of year. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Was on Vermilion last week didn't get one in the boat. All I have to say is get a reservation to fish the bowl, or anywhere on the East end. Fishing pressure is at a all time high.

Mostly guys pre-fishing for the PMTT. It looks like a Ranger convention out there. Good luck finding a spot to fish.

I laugh everytime I here that, "good luck finding a spot" There's more spots that haven't been fished than spots that have been.

Pressure, pressure and more pressure. As Chad Cain said these fish have got to have wiplash from all of the baits flying by there heads. You can hardly fish a spot on the lake with out some one else pulling up on top of you. To many tournaments. This is ridiculous! It is like fishing a metro lake on a holliday weekend.

my buddy has a cabin on the west end and i've been going up there the last 3 years. we fished the west end during the MMTT this year. i've never thought the pressure was very bad at all...only running into other boats when fishing the true community spots. a little bit of exploring and we've found lots of decent spots with no one in sight. of course, we went fishless during the tourney, so maybe they're all terrible spots...except for those dang big lazy fish sitting on them in the sun laughing at us. go up there during September and October and there's really no one around. is it that much worse on the east end than the west? i suppose it's a bit closer for people driving up from the Cities. maybe i'll just stick to the west...

Is anyone else catching alot of pike with muskie baits on vermilion? and does anyone know if that would be a good sign or a bad sign that it is a good muskie spot?

The pike population is likely growing as a result of the new creel limit increases that went in effect a couple years ago.

Posts: 20214 Location: oswego, il | I like the bonus larger pike. I take my kids up there and we get at least one nice one over 30" every time. It just adds to the lake if you ask me.

Lots of big pike in that lake, just fish a little deeper and you can score some real dandy's over 40".

Was up on the 10th and 11th. Fishing was a little slow but we boated a 44, and had another dandy toss a bait on a headshake a bit later. Both in the morning. Pressure is definitely high in spots, but we whacked the 44 on a community spot and lost the other on a well known spot that had just been hit by someone else 20 minutes earlier. For the most part better off going exploring if you have the time, other wise toss something you think will be different than what the fish are seeing day in and day out. We did best on big bucktails however , as nothing else seemed to do the trick. Dan

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I was out last week for 4 days with my 13yr old daughter and 9yr old son. We only fished about 4-5hrs from about 5pm each day. Water temps. were 72*-74*, on the east end. the water was a bit greenish compaired to clear just 2 weeks ago., We got a 42", 29"walley, anda few nice pike. My son and I were in the front of the boat on the 2nd day, he was learning how to work a reg. bulldawg(he always used a small dawg before) I was throwing a weagle and watching him and talking, not paying attention to the weagle. we are side by side as he pulls his bait out of the water a HUGE muskie comes out of the water, head shaking, tail walking, trying to inhale my weagle about 2ft in front of Justin.....His eyes almost popped out of his head!! As I turn to fight the fish (still going crazy) I hear him shout: HOLY SH%*!!! just as I hear this he jumps back and lands on a lure with his butt, I look back to Justin the fish comes loose all within 5-6 seconds..... What a rush. Luckly the hooks that he landed on just got his pants. This little 5 second battle with this fish is something justin and I will never forget it was halarious... I'll be out Thur-Sun in a burgundy and white Skeeter Jerome

Posts: 479 Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | Jerome, I had a similar incident several years ago when my daughters were young, but I was the one that was hooked! I'll be there this weekend in a blue/gold Ranger with 200 Evinrude, say Hi if you see me.

Posts: 20214 Location: oswego, il | I had most every area i wanted to fish to myself last week but I never fished the "household name" spots. Caught only big smallmouths topwater fishing reefs. lake was bloomed and defeinitely affected the fishing as compared to the same time of year when it was not. My grandfather did get a big pike which was cool, in an offshoot of the lake that had no bloom, go figure.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Went out Fri with two friends from Chi town. East wind, air temp:62*-63*, water 67*-68* and still a bit greenish. Moved a couple nice fish early, than nailed a fat 43.5 fish about 11:30am on a weagle. Saturday... my friends leave to go fish in Hayward on there way back home, so I hit the lake about noon untill 9:00pm. West wind(slight) 78* air temp, water temp70*-72*. Saw a few good fish early then around 3:30 the fish started to turn on! In an hour I had three good strikes on top water and boated a healthy 45" fish, also six or seven good follows. Oh my friends that went to hayward..... Big 0 ...... they should have stayed on Vermillion. Sunday... no wind hot! no fish.. Not as many musky boats out there like there has been. Jerome

Posts: 30 | I’m heading up to the big V this weekend for the first time in about ten years and only my second time overall. Anyone got any tips from a recent outing? Not looking for spots or anything but what kind of areas you moved the most fish and what lures seem to be best. Thanks in advance. Jimmy

Posts: 33 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Fished Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening. Huge cold front and east/northeast winds made fishing very tough. We managed to raise a dozen fish and boat a 42. We were on the main lake area. Still some bloom in the water that limited visibility to about two or three feet into the water. Water level is low, about 1.5 feet below normal I was told. Our fish were all tight to the islands and not on the reefs. Our best baits were large bucktails and various topwater. Up until Saturday afternoon when PMTT boats started appearing, we were able to fish any spot we wanted any time we wanted. Wind started blowing from the south again saturday evening and if the weather stablizes things should get going again.

Posts: 227 Location: Maple Grove | Just got back. West end. Only spent about a day and a half on the water. Some buddies thought the beer was more interesting than the fishing! In all we moved 5 fish. I was 0 for 2 on hookups with a suick and a buddy moved a couple on a shallow invader. Including a fish in the upper 40" class. We moved fish in both weed and rock.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Was up for the PMTT over the weekend. The action was pretty good for us, though hooking sucked.. Got a 40" on Friday, and missed a real big one. saturday lost 3 fish, and had a few other blow up, and look around at us. Sunday had a real good one eat but no hooks. Either topwater ultra tight, or deep cranks or rubber out and a bit off structure. I did not make it to the awards ceremony, as my partner became a grandpa during the tourney and had to get home, but I did hear that a few others were caught up top. Wish I was still there. The action was pretty decent. Edited by Reef Hawg 9/18/2006 5:31 PM
