Subject: CBS News Coverage of Mr. Spray’s WR Muskie

The World Record Muskie Alliance will appear on an upcoming CBS News Sunday Morning as part of a national feature story about the current Spray record controversy. The episode is scheduled to air on either Sunday, June 18, or Sunday, June 25, at 8 a.m. CST.
CBS News Sunday Morning is considered one of television’s highest-quality news shows, and a throwback to the “old guard” style of thoughtful news broadcasting. The program was formerly hosted by the late Charles Kuralt from 1979 until 1994, when he was replaced by current host, Charles Osgood.
This installment should hold particular interest for muskie anglers as correspondent Bill Geist interviews Spence Petros, Chicago Sun-Times Writer Dale Bowman, WRMA President Rich Delaney, University of Minnesota Professor Dr. Douglas Arnold and others about the current record controversy.

CBS also interviewed a guy named "Pepsi,” who a gangsters bodyguard who may have had something to do with Louie Spray's 1949 record according to Spence. Dale Bowman of the Sun- Times wrote an article this past Sunday that pertained to this as well.

never heard that either BUT!!!!!!!!!! It is an Illinois group that is after the record to be thrown out. Seems everyone talking against it is from there. I somehow can't help but to think there is a hidden motive or agenda behind this. I'm sorry but the way this whole deal is going down stinks to me. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck its probably a duck. This whole thing just irks me and I for one am tired of hearing about it. If you doubt it fine then start your own record keeping group and you can control it from this day on and put in first place whatever fish you want to.. My question to those that are the big pushers to this record being thrown out is>>>>>>>>>> Have you ever streched the truth on a muskie you caught, you know you all have. Its in the past and whats done is done, move on get over it.
You sure make a guy think about what hed do if he caught a fish he thought might be a record. You better keep it or the doubting thomases will pop up and get you. Keep it then they cannot argue about it. Sorry that is at least till your dead and most witnesses along with you.

Don, I completely disagree. It's not just a few illinois guys who are behind this and believe the muskies are false. There are people from all over many from wisconsin. Most people armed with the facts fall to the wrma side. It's time the hall is exposed for what it is, besides they started this whole mess. It's funny, the walleye record was overturned by the hall without any controvery and look at the lengths they goto to see they keep their false fish atop their books. Sad. Justice needs to be served. I am glad this has gotten to a national tv level now. It's a great story.

Don, you need to explain what these ulterior "quacking" motives might be? The WRMA was founded to determine the largest muskie and put an end the controversy... very simple. We were told by the President of the Hall, (John Dettloff) that our research would be considered fairly and unbiased - it absolutely was not. All legitimate research conducted (even by the Hall's own Professors) and every stitch of common sense points to this fish (and all Spray's fish) being completely bogus.

Once the WRMA completes their review and determines what the largest fish really is, we will then redirect and address other issues like stocking, habitat restoration and dark house spearing. One thing is for sure... obviously we are not afraid of a little controversy and will battle for what's right and in the best interest of the muskie and muskie fisherman.

If you want to continue to believe in Spray's record, that's Ok... some people still believe in Lawton's NY state record too. If you are upset with the WRMA for seeking the truth and asking the Hall to begin keeping actuate records... that is certainly your prerogative. However, perhaps your upset with the wrong group... and might even consider changing your mind if you or a friend were to catch a 68 pounder on Green Bay this fall?

Oh, the reason for this post originally...I received an update this morning on the airing date of the CBS news broadcast.

IT WILL BE SUNDAY, 6-25.

Yawn, Yawn. I thought(hoped) this thing was dead. I will watch the show, but only from the history standpoint. I personally don't care either way, about Spray's record fish, or any other. I think all this controversy has done is divide the muskie angling community, and created some enemies and that is not good for this sport. You want to end the contoversy, catch a bigger fish.

Personally I don't care WHERE the world record Comes from or WHO caught it, I just would like to see an undisputed 100% verifyable record, can that ever happen ????

shep and john I agree I just don't care and I am tired of it. If an organization tries to tell me that part of the evidence they have comes from a past ganster I have to laugh. He sounds like a real good reference to me. Next thing they will say is that is that the real fish was in capones vault but Geraldo snuck off with it.

I do know this for sure, if anyone catches a fish that they think could be the record you best keep it or you'll be at the end of this kind of thing. Its a shame what this has come to and hope soon it will go away.

Al Capone caught it, and then cut the head off and put it in Louis Sprays bed at night while he slept because Louie was running booze from Chcago to Boulder Junction and owed Al money. Al knew the best way to get to him was to put the head of the world record muskie in his bed as a warning that he "would sleep with the fishes" unless he paid up. But Louie sewed the head on a 40 pounder and took some pictures and was the put in witness protection if he would testify against Al. The Feds, in turn, made up the world record photos and story and the rest is history. Now the fish is buried right next to Jimmy Hoffa.

Guys,
If Bill Geist is the correspondent I am thinking of from that show, then he'll probably be making fun of the whole deal. His is usually the comic part of the show, and the things he reports on he usually make some fun of. This topic is ripe for ridicule in my opinion, to most non-musky folks it surely sounds like comedy. I'll be fishing instead, though I will tape it to see Spence and the others.
2 cents.

I think your on to something here! Spray's musky had 37 bullet holes in it, all that extra lead coming from that tommy gun added significant weight to the fish, CAPONE caught the musky!!! I also heard it had syphlis too if that is true, just icing on the cake.

That's some funny stuff Beaver and Todd, here's my 2 (ok maybe 3) cents.

Let me get this straight, someone takes the time to post up a professional and informative press release and some guys twist it, laugh at it and then say they are not interested but will watch or even tape the show? It's also a direct contradiction that a guy takes the time to post three times saying he's not interested because the action in and of itself says he is interested and most likely has an agenda that he's trying to cover up. Maybe it has to coincide with the same agenda of the FWFHF. It would appear to me (and anyone who can read) that Spence Petros and Dale Bowman are the only ones endorsing the gangster connection, so at least try to get your facts straight on information contained right here on this very post. I find it amusing that some feel the gangster connection is ridiculous but then turn right around and say that's the only reason they want to watch the show. Amazing.

The fact that CBS finds it newsworthy enough to poke fun at tells you how ridiculous the situation has become and chance now favors additional media will follow as this thing continues to snowball. It is not the WRMA that is beating a dead horse here folks, it is a nationally syndicated news broadcast. If the FWFHF will not overturn the record based on scientific facts and legitimate research perhaps they will be brought to their knees with national public ridicule? Are they called the national freshwater fishing Hall of Fame or the Hayward freshwater fishing Hall of Fame? A safe bet is that they will soon be laughed at on Leno and Letterman too. Sorry guys, this thing is not going away anytime soon as I just heard through the grapevine that another Spray protest will be filed at the FWFHF again this fall by several individuals outside of the WRMA. Perhaps the most silly and obvious thing is that nowhere do I see anyone here (or anywhere else) saying "look at the pictures", "look at the evidence" of course that's a 70 pound fish? Ignoring or wishing a problem to go away has never been a viable means to address a problem, so you're going to have to do something a little more constructive than that. The only way I can see to get an undisputed world record is to first eliminate the fakes. There is no question that the Louie Fish has been proven false and the FWFHF is attempting to covering it up. For the FWFHF and a few stragglers to continue this charade is pointless and laughable, perhaps the reason CBS latched onto it? The next step might be an investigative reporter decides to expose an active 50 year old conspiracy? This is not a "Wisconsin-Illinois deal", it is a "Lie-truth deal" that is certainly here to stay gentlemen, you can ignore it and pretend it is not there, but that will NOT make it go away. In a nutshell www.worldrecordmuskiealliance.com

Please take it into light that I am also making fun of this situation and and the conspiracy thing with Illinois is toungue in cheek , lighten up as you all know we tease the flatlanders. ITS DONE IN FUN!!! Hope that answers that part of it. I doubt I'll watch as I'd rather be on the water and won't bother to tape it either. Old records are that, just old records. We move on and recognize the fish caught today that are well documented. I just hope if its a record you have 100 witnesses and none of them gangsters.

Now I think I'll go look for the ghetti that has been reported seen in the north woods.

Maybe I'll see a hodag to

The 25th...it'll be interesting...topical, I'm sure...they can't tell an "R" rated story on public TV Sunday Morning.

Hey, Pfeiff...Spray indeed had "connections". Remember his fishing "Partner" from the 1939 and 1940 fish? Tom Campbell?

Did it strike you odd that some Greek from Florida is up in the Northwoods helping run the dice table? Where do you think HE came from? DisneyWorld?

Do you know ANYTHING about Lou Spray? When i was at the FWFHF recording ALL OF THE SPRAY FILES that exist(that's right, Don...I took all of the Spray files HOME WITH ME on Digital Photos), I took Emmitt Brown out for dinner, and it became clear to me that I am one of the foremost authorities on Lou Spray...I've met only 4 people who know more about his life than I do...an oldtimer from Rice lake that is friends with some descendants of the old Spray crowd...the chairman of the WRMA-Jerry Newman...John Dettloff, recently had a private conversation in the Little Red Bar at Indian Trail for about 3 hours, just me and him...I helped him understand some basic photogrammetry principals that he DID NOT UNDERSTAND which of course led to his errors in assessing ALL of Spray's fish....and...hmm...I guess i only know 3 other people...

...and you are not one of them, Don.

PS here's a pic of Widmer Smith's 70lb 4oz Muskie...ever hear of him?

Guest, trust me, nobody wants to see the hall sink like the titianic more than me. They are ruthless and don't care who they hurt or destroy in their wake of lies. I will be watching. I hope the hall comes out smelleing like skunk, I am sure they will, problem is skunks can't smell their own stink, especially these skunks.

This thread has been awfully quiet since the 25th.

Did I miss the referenced segment? I watched the last 50 minutes of the program, and no mention of 'our' segment.

Did it get postponed, or did I flat-out miss it?

Been to the hall and have seen everything there you have> have talked to many people about it this and interviewed them when I had my radio show. I have talked to john D several times about it. It was a very big fish for sure. How big I don't know but I doubt back then that Mr. spray was so camera savy that he knew how to play all the angles. Also they did not have the cameras we do now with wideangle lens to make the fish appear bigger. As I told larry I have doubts to the size of it to but none of you have given 100% solid proof that its a fraud. You have some good data but one still has to look at the documentation that this fish has. To throw out the record you need better proof then you have now.
The following is what I here so often from musky hunters!!!!!!!!!! Remember I'm just the relay of this but do agree to a certain point. Remember what a new record could be worth to someone that knows how to market themselves.
I"m told by many that say the reason that many anglers want this record thrown out is. First after and if they are successfull they will go after c.jonsons record. What this does is lower the bar greatly for someone to sey a new record. I hear that all the time from anglers. The 2nd thing I here often is that they are tired of this and just want it to go away.

The record as it now can be broken and will be so stop all the drama about this and go fish. Its what I'll be doing in 6 hours.Everyone is just one cast away from breaking it.

Question for all the doubters. What the heck difference does it really make to you? Unless you fish waters where it can really be broken and become the new record holder do you really Care?

Hello everyone, we are now told The World Record Muskie Alliance will be appearing on this weeks upcoming CBS News Sunday Morning show as part of the national feature story about the Spray record controversy. The 8 minute long episode is scheduled to air this Sunday, July 9, at 8 a.m. CST. There is still a possibility it may get bumped again, however, we have been informed that it will eventuality be nationally televised either way.

Don, if it does not matter... why did CBS cover it and why do you continue to post about it then? If a record has been proven to be fake it should no longer be a record. The "why the WRMA is doing this" is meaningless and petty in my opinion.
