Posts: 4266 | I am so envious. I'd rather be in my heated garage cubby-hole priming lures and have a nice afternoon nap. But you guys and girls all have fun out there. Beav

the weather was the lead story on Day One of the PMTT on Petenwell in central Wisconsin. a "historical" low pressure system creating high speed northwest winds, plus a 30 degree temperature drop in 2 days greeted contestants at the ironically named "Spring Warm Up!" teams were in high spirits at the start, in spite of very rough and miserable morning conditions with 20mph+ winds and temperatures barely into the upper 30s, the day gradually improved with lessening winds and a slight warmup reaching 47 degrees by the late afternoon. the weather made for some rough going: some teams suffered battery, motor, or GPS problems overnight. one of the judges was dumped in the lake (51 degree water) by a rogue wave which swamped and shut down his motor - he's alright thankfully, and Tony Grant/Laura Morrison lost their trolling motor when the quick release mount was triggered by a wave while running across the main lake in the morning. one judge boat also witnessed a "big red Ranger" launch itself completely airborne off a deadhead stump, with the prop clearing it in the air. i'll bet that left a mark in the fiberglass: running on plane in backwater sloughs is a bad idea... the big fish, at 43", was caught right off the bat to set the bar for the day. the remaining 8 fish caught were spread out through the day and with varying tactics, some casting, some trolling, some in shallow sloughs, some in the current, some in the lake. one thing was clear: the teams that produced were "on", with them all reporting other fish contacted and lost. the Day 1 leading team worked a main-lake pattern of following the baitfish: walleyes and crappies, which they'd developed in over 20 years of fishing the Petenwell flowage for those "other" species. local fishermen were very well represented on the leaderboad, sometimes experience does count! there was some pre-tourney concern that a big tourney would crowd the north end of the lake in the river and flowage areas. the good news was that boats were mostly spread out, and respectful. when i poked into Devil's Elbow late in the day, there were only 3 other boats in view. at the dinner and standings meeting to end Day 1, PMTT Director Tim Widlacki presented the 12 Apostles' Musky Club with a check for $1000 to aid their stocking efforts on the Petenwell Flowage. this recognition and payback to a "created" muskie fishery capable of annually hosting big tourneys was gratefully accepted by the local muskie club. thanks PMTT! weather was a bit nicer today...42 degrees at the start, 46 degrees at the end of the tourney. less wind, less rain, even a glimpse of the sun! i know of a couple fish caught, including another fish by one of the teams that was on the board yesterday. lots of stories of missed opportunities... awards ceremony starts at 3pm, with final results. here's some pics from today, including a undersized (33") fish caught by Jason Schillinger that i was lucky enough to witness. the Day 1 leaders scored again today...all three fish came within 1/4 mile of each other on a gold speckled bulldawg (standard) fishing the riprap down on the south end of the lake...will the extra fish be the insurance they need?

2nd place team of Rusteberg and Bowman tripled on day one by fishing shallow water near the start point and out of the wind and rain, good enough to hold up for 2nd place. Attachments ---------------- Pete2 002.jpg (96KB - 46 downloads) Pete2 024.jpg (103KB - 48 downloads)

3rd place team of Schillinger and Kempen boated one fish each day, plus another fish on day two that was one inch too small to score. they used local knowledge that severe cold in the spring puts muskies back into "spawn mode" on Petenwell, small side-to-side jerkbaits were the ticket. 4th place team of Nigro and Craine got the day one "big fish" running a Shallow Invader somewhere on the water. Attachments ---------------- Pete2 009.jpg (98KB - 42 downloads)

5th place team of Forcier and Meyer tagged a respectable 40"er on day one by using their local guiding knowledge and throwing bucktails to shallow-holding fish. on day two they swung for the fences fishing deeper water on the main lake, knowing they needed a big fish to move up, but no luck. Todd Forcier also hosts the Petenwell Musky Challenge tourney next weekend, now in it's 10th year. 7th place team of Tengwall and Guddal hit paydirt by sticking to their plan. they found fish while pre-fishing earlier in the week and they fished the same 200 yards of shallow water throughout the entire tournament. focusing on an area with a bit of current and a clear water inlet put them in the money. Posts: 734 Location: Watertown, MN | Lambeau, Great time had, despite the terrible weathers, Friday was the historic lowest barometric pressure in May, Snow, and 20-30 mph winds, can't wait to get on the water. After starting off friday with GPS module failure(So Much for GPS trail to the River), should have known the day would only get worse, as we proceede to loose 3 fish in a 1 hour period on friday. Great Job Jason, Todd, and the rest of the Pete boys, had a blast fishing it and hope your stocking program keeps the lake going. Troyz
