Location: Northern Illinois | Okay...I'm done with the school thing and am ready to sell my XBox 360 valued at $400 plus 4 games and 2 controllers. Roughly $600-$700 worth. I decided that I'm definitely gonna buy a digital camera for around $300. Give me your favorite in the poll and then explain why and which model you have.

I use the Nikon D70 with a wide angle zoom. It is a little over kill but for a fish of a life time it is worth it!

| I have a Sony Cybershot 7.2 megapixel. It has a Zeiss lens and is a great camera. I would sell it used if interested. I might get something bigger is the only thing I would do different. This is perfect for in the boat, it is about the size of a deck of cards. |

| I have an older Sony Cybershot that I bring in the boat. It's 3.3 megapixel, which can still be blown up to an 8x10 in photo quality. It also does short mpegs. We also have a Nikon D70 that we use for the family pictures. Both are great cameras although the Nikon is much newer, and therefore much better. The only thing I wish the Nikon had was a mpeg mode. However, it is meant to be a still camera. If I were buying one for the boat, the still and the movie mode would be my preference. I have captured some cool moments with the movie. |

| I use a Nikon D50 DSLR. It works great, and I've got some nice results recently, including the cover of this month's Muskie magazine. You can change lenses, and adjust anything you like such as Aperture, Shutter speed, white balance, ISO, etc.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | We also use a D70, Zach uses that camera. I found the 50 easier to handle, it just felt better to me. Look at the photos from WalleyeFIRST.com from the last couple FLW/PWT events, you'll see the quality is there. We use Pelican cases for travel and protection from the elements.
The picture quality comes not just from a quality camera, but also, and most importantly a very high quality lens. The D50 shoots as fast as one can hit the button! You won't miss many shots with this camera. |

Location: Davenport, IA | I have an hp 320. Its 2.1 megapixels, which is good for 4x6 pictures, they are better than film quality IME. The camera is tough. It has been dropped many times and gotten wet in the boat and everything else you can think of but still works great. |

Location: Oregon | I recently bought a Pentax Optio WPI. The camera is made for us fisherman. Totally waterproof and can take underwater down to I believe 5 meters. The camera has a three power zoom and 6 megapixels, great camera! Here is a write-up about the camera if you are interested:

| I was in a hurry earlier, and didn't have much time to reply, so I thought I'd add a little more here.
I belong to two separate photo sites, and people at both will tell you that one of the first steps in buying a new camera, is to go to a camera store and hold some different models in your hands. That is one reason I bought the D50, as to me, the D70s was a little big, and the Canon 350XT felt kind of toy-like. You can get cheaper prices on line at B&H Photo.com, or Cameta camera, which sells through E-Bay, and is completely reputable. I have bought lots of stuff from B&H, and you will have no problems with them either.
You can also try dcresource.com to look at a bunch of different cameras, and dpreview.com, which even lets you see details of multiple cameras in a side by side comparrison.
I am going to miss the Muskie opener in Minnesota due to a photo job I got. Actually, I got another job today, so I'm going to miss the Walleye opener too. Oh well, I'll have more money for baits.
Here is the latest Muskie magazine cover. I took the center photo of Mrs. Gil Hamm, and three others. I'd strongly suggest the Nikon D50, as it's got to be the best DSLR in it's price range. Good luck.

Location: Stevens Point, WI | I have a Nikon Cool Pix 8700 8 megapixel that I really like. It's as close to an SLR digital without being an SLR. It has a very fast shutter speed, MPEG movie capability and has many great presets for different types of photos. It also has 8X optical zoom which is really important for image quality. |

Good cameras, but no where near the Nikon D50 for features and picture quality, as the Fujis were less expensive models. The Nikon 50's most important feature other than picture quality in my opinion is the VERY fast recovery, I can shoot pictures like a machine gun. |

I've seen it in action and after being dunked in a pond while it was on and had a picture taken it was still fine...definite bonus for a fishing camera. |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | I would suggest you ask yourself some questions about how you will use the camera and use that list as your requirements when you go out to buy one.
I have a 5.0MP Sony that I paid about $400 for a couple years ago. It takes a decent picture IF you have the right conditions and subject. If the lighting is not good, the tiny little built in flash can't give you enough light. Mine has been unable to focus properly for night photos. When it can't focus it won't let you shoot the picture and there's no manual focus overide on most point and shoot cameras. If you had a DLSR you could manually focus and still get the shot. Another problem with point and shoot digitals is that many have a huge delay from the time you press the shutter button to the time the camera snaps the shutter. This can be a very big problem if you ever shoot any moving subjects. Yet another shortcoming of many point and shoot digitals is their lenses. To get to a low price point they often put a lousy lense on the camera. Look at the lowest aperature setting available on the lens and that will tell you how much light they can let in and therefore minimize the need for a flash. After ruining many of the shots of our young child who moved during the shutter delay I got fed up and bought a DSLR like I should have in the first place. I have a Canon Rebel DSLR that has been awesome. The lens that comes with it is ok. I also purchased a 50mm f1.8 lens which nearly eliminates the need for a flash in many situations where other cameras would need one giving me much better results. |

| Like Luke, I use a 50mm f/1.8, except that it's a Nikon. The best quality about the D50 is it's ability to take shots in low light. I NEVER use the Flash, and get much more natural looking shots. I think Luke has the 350XT Canon, which is similar to the Nikon D50, except it has 2 more Megapixels and a much higher price tag. The Image quality difference wouldn't be noticable between the two. Both are highly reccomended. |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I use a Cannon A610, 5 MP, with a Gorilla Pod which can be twisted around so you can secure camera almost anyplace(steering wheel, rail) helps a lot when fishing alone, or if you want your partner in the pic with ya.
Bought camera on internet, complete with two extra lenses, rechargeable batteries/charger, case, 1 G card, and all kinds of extras for $371. Camera locally is around $399 alone. |
