Posts: 34 Location: Iowa | This may be a crazy question, but I am going to ask it anyway. I have always heard stories of Muskies eating baby ducks and geese. Being in Iowa I can buy baby ducks and chickens cheap. Can you use them for bait?

Posts: 605 Location: Marshfield, WI | Anybody ever try any artificial duck baits? The other day I found 3 baby ducks rigged together at one bait on ebay. Can't find it now. I found this on ebay though. http://cgi.ebay.com/wooden-glass-eye-musky-size-duck-lure_W0QQitemZ... Krishna

Posts: 8802 | You guys are bad, man. I would have a hard time rigging up a duckling. Guess it ain't any different than a sucker, but still...

Posts: 34 Location: Iowa | I guess I would use a small sucker rig? Maybe hold it on with a rubber band? I can get them for about 75cents ea. as ducklings.

Posts: 108 Location: IN | I could never bring myself to do it. But if I could, I would imagine it would require some sort of rubber band rig that wouldn't penetrate the ducklings body. It would be very hard to keep the little guys alive long enough to use them. They go into shock very easily and the first poke of a hook, whether anatomically fatal or not, would probably cause their death in a very short period of time.

A very old Indian guy once told me about the best Muskie bait he had ever used. It involved somehow strapping a live gopher to a little plank. It was said that back in the day, it couldn't be beat. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Posts: 201 Location: Stevens Point | Yes i have heard of this gopher on a board, but when it was told to me they used squirells with hooks strapped to them, floated them out on a board, then jerked the board out from beneath with a rope and let the squirrell do the rest. I'm sure it worked great, but I'm pretty sure it is very illegal today. I would imagine the baby duck is too, it if it happens to be leagal i think it would be a dynamite addition to ones arsenal... ![]()

It reminds me a little of InFisherman's "Greatest Muskie Video Ever Made". A lady is screaming on her dock, and the InFishermen guys go to see what the problem is. She says a HUGE Muskie just ate her dog. I think it was Larry Dahlberg who says, "Ate your dog, huh.........what color was he? Classic. By the way, I doubt the squirrels or Gophers were very willing participants. I bet it did work though.

Posts: 605 Location: Marshfield, WI | Where would you keep the baby ducks? In the livewell? Be funny if a warden stopped you and asked what was in your livewell and opens them up and sees a dozen baby ducks. By the way, ducks aren't mammals. Mammals give live birth and produce milk. Krishna

Posts: 476 Location: WI | Someone sent me an e-mail of a person that caught a northern pike and while filleting it out found an entire duck in its belly. The picture is quite unique, not sure if everyone would enjoy it or not, so I won't post it. The pike seems to be only 35-37 inches too. GotOne

Posts: 330 Location: Pittsburgh, pa | I used live Feeder Mice a few years ago. They didn't swim very long. It seems they went into shock and just floated. Gotone- I would like to see a picture of the Pike.

Posts: 32904 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Yes, I sure did. The thing looked totally deformed. And, I'd bet I caught that fish before you were born, D, and WAY before CPR was even a acronym. If I remember, there were 6 in there.

Posts: 5874 | My dad made a baby duck lure, many, many years ago. It was made from a tennis ball, and had some yellow feathers on it, and a treble hook on it's belly. I vaquely remember seeing it. I'm pretty sure he caught a fish on it. I remember him laughing about it, with my uncle. BTW, they fished Butte des Mortes back in the day.
