Location: Tomahawk, Wisconsin | A guy that I work with has a twelve year old son that is really primed to get into muskie fishing. The question that he posed to me the other day was; what are the five baits that I should buy for my son to get him going on this musky fishing gig? Hmmm, so I sat there for a bit and came up with five all arounders, if this question were asked of you what would you suggest???? Limit of five and cover your bases!! |

Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | My answer would be different than if he were asking which 5 lures I would choose for myself. When looking at a 12 year old that's new to musky fishing, I would keep it simple. Spinnerbait, medium sized bucktail, Depth Raider, prop style top water like a Top Raider and a Suick. But my answer might also be different depending on how much fishing this 12 year old has done in the past.

| I'd keep the baits to 5 that ride fairly high in the water...last thing you want is for him to get frustrated with lots o' weeds on his bait
I"d go with in no particular order
Lee's Chopper
Mepps Marabou bucktail
Hellhound, easy to work!
Large minnow bait like a big Slammer
Depthraider or maybe regular dawg for when he is out on rocks or suspendo's |

Location: Stevens Point | A CREEPER was the first bait in my box and the first bait I caught a fish on, but I figured a topraider was slightly more versatile, it would be in my ten bait recomendation for reasons as mentioned by Sponge. |

5. Topraider
All those baits are great fish catchers and very easy to use. None of them are too expensive either (topraider is the most at around $20) |

5-topwater that pushes alot of water- i like snowcrest's bullseye
6- manta or phantom-both very easy to use

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I raised a couple Muskie anglers. At 12, there's a few backlashes and fubars to deal with. Keep the lures effective but easy to use. There's other combos, but at near midnight on a Tuesday, this will work.

1) Black/Nickel Mepps Giant Killer (if you can find the old black with white blade that would take precedence)
2) black Hawg Wobbler
3) Crane (partial to brown/white)
4) As much as I hate them, Spinnerbait of some sort - something pike will also chew up to keep them interested
5) 6" Exude Mister Twister Shad tails with a jig head to fit. The kid will also catch bass, walleyes, and pike on this baby! |

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Wow, I'm glad alot of you weren't my dad when I was starting out. It takes some time before you can chuck those big baits.
My starter package would include the following;
1.Mepps Musky Killer-pike will smash this too
2.Top Raider
3.Baby Shallow Raider-works great twitched or straight retrieved.
4.Spring Dawg - Easy to cast, works great on pike too
5.Spinner Bait, Slopmaster, Grinder, or Ace
When choosing baits for beginners you have to remember that sometimes for them boating a pike is better than just washing baits. Keep the baits musky sized, but the smaller versions to encourage multi species action. |

1. Top raider
2. Rad dog spinnerbait
3. 8" believer, good for trolling and casting
4. medium sized, willow leaf bucktail, like a Harasser. Might as well go with the traditional black and silver.
5. DDD, it's much easier to retrieve than a depth raider |

Location: Ames, Iowa | Right on Norm. My 14 yr old's been at it a couple years, and now my 11 yr old wants to get started. The 11 year old inherited the 4601 C3 from the older one, who moved up to a 5601.
Smaller, lighter rods to throw smaller baits on smaller reels for smaller hands. If my guys get into a bunch of northerns they'll be just as happy. My 11 yr old loves throwing spinnerbaits.
My 14 year old's 5 fav baits are a white/nickel Musky Killer, blk/org Slammer Topwater, 5/8 oz hammered nickel spoon, 7 inch Slammer crankbait in walleye, 6 inch black Bulldawg. None too tiring.
