The Chip is really, really good right now. Tanner released a 48" fish yesterday and lost and saw a few others. We caught two, missed four, and saw six others yesterday. Have been moving on average ten fish in a normal eight hour day. Had a front go through last night but the fish were still going this morning. There were three fish over fifty caught last week from the Chip. Lots of upper forty inch fish moving right now. I have never seen this many big fish right off the back. Moving fish on Tanner's Rabbid Squirrels, Stillwaters, and undertakers. Had a couple big fish up last night on a new creeper I'm working on. It's great to see fish going on topwater so early in the year. Water temps are around 65 to 72 degrees. Nice and warm. Ty

Went out for an hour last night and had one follow on a Stillwater and one hit in a figure eight on a Creeper I'm trying to perfect. Beautiful night for being on the water. That creeper hit was funny. Never seen a creeper leave the water so fast with a fish chasing it. Went out from 11:00 to 12:30 today for a quick fix. Had one swipe at a Stillwater and three follow in Rabbid Squirrel bucktails. Biggest was about 44 or so and the rest were around 40. Talked to Darrel Neibour who was guiding walleye at the same time and he caught one muskie on a jig and minnow and saw another boat release two. Wish I could fish all day today but have to go to Duluth. Might get out at dark. Ty

Fished four spots tonight and had two nice fish up. They followed in a Stillwater and then followed a big game twitchbait and then followed my creeper. They both were pretty active but just would not open their yappers. Maybe tomorrow. Water temps were 71.5 degrees. Fish are really going on topwater right now. Ty

Fished from noon till dark yesterday and only boated one small fish on a ghosttail. Lost one at the boat on a Ghosttail. Lost another at the boat on a Rabbid Squirrel. I blew one on a Suick after a couple quick head shakes. All in all we had somewhere around 12 fish hit or follow with only one little guy actually caught. Not the best day as far as luck goes. I did have a 48 ish fish follow up that was a beast of a fish. We'll try him today Most fish were on bucktails yesterday. First day without any topwater action. Water temps were from 68 to 75 degrees. Cloudy and breezy right now so it should be good today. Ty

Guiding on a different lake in the morning. Had action from 12 different fish. Most were on undertakers. None boated but a couple close calls. Went back out on the Chip for the evening bite. Caught three, lost one, and a couple follows. Rabbid Squirrels moved three fish and caught one. Undertakers moved two fish and caught one. One caght on a Pacemaker also. The small males were on the prowl last night. Lots of action right away when we got out at 6:30. We went in for fish fry at 7:00. When we got back out all of the baitfish had stopped moving. Ogh well, it was a beautiful night out. Water temps were 72 to 74 degrees in the areas we fished. The nice thing is Tanner said he gave up on the Chip 10 minutes before my girlfriend and I boated two fish on two casts. Thanks for the inspiration Tanner! Life is good! Ty

Big fish following today but none netted. Had a fish in the fifty inch class charge the bait at the boat. The angler I had out was new to muskie fishing that day. When the fish came in he stopped reeling and just said Whoa! Priceless. The fish didn't like the bait just dangling there so he left. Saw one other close to the same size on a Suick and a couple others in the low 40 inch class. Two big fish were on Ghosttail and Suick. The others were on Stillwaters. More rain tomorrow so maybe they will go then. Ty

This is what was written by Dave N. of the WDNR in Hayward after investigating the reports of this large fish. "Today Frank Pratt and I took our copies of the photos to the site on the dam where the photos had been taken. We found the exact location where the dead fish had been laid out for photographic purposes. It was relatively easy to do, because the bars in the racks are somewhat variable, and the pattern of their variability revealed the exact location with 100% certainty. Using our photographs for comparison and measuring the bars, spacers, and other fixed items on site, Frank and I were able to determine that the dead musky in the photos could only have been about 42 inches long, give or take an inch or so. It could not have been smaller than 40 inches, nor could it have been larger than 44 inches. In any event, it was a beautiful, plump fish, but not a record fish by any stretch of the imagination. I hope this answers everyone's questions." Dave Neuswanger Fisheries Supervisor, Upper Chippewa Basin Wisconsin DNR, Hayward

Had a good day considering the weather. We had cold windy conditions this morning(north winds). The main front went through the last couple days. It cleared off around noon today. We had two right away go after Stillwaters this morning. One was in the low forty inch class and the other looked to be upper forty or better. Really nice fish! The cool thing was that the big fish had it's whole back out of the water when it went after the bait. Then we didn't throw the Stillwater the rest of the day. Makes sense right? Nobody said I was smart. Just wasn't feelin' it after that. My clients probably thought I was insane. We saw two others on Ghosttails. One that was decent and one that my client said was really really big. He caught a 46" fish with me last time so he has seen good sized fish. He said he couldn't put a number on it. I will! 167! That's how many days I have left this year to try and get that fish. We also saw two on Suicks so they were at least following after the cold front which is better than I thought we would do. Should be sunny tomorrow so we should at least be able to see the follows better. We'll see how we do. Ty

Esox2hart, Give me a call ---715-462-9403 Two days ago we fished eight hours strait and I blew two fish on undertakers. I was walking a client through how to do a figure eight on one of the two and I looked back and saw a fish with my undertaker in it's mouth. Way to pay attention! We saw three others that followed in tight to the baits. Two on suicks and one big fish on a Rabid Squirrel. Yesterday I was guiding for pike and bass during the day. Went out with my girlfriend at sundown and she had a really nice fish come out of the water after a Rough Runner. Scared the crap out of us. Very big fish! I had one follow a pacemaker a little while later. Gonna fish from noon on today and there is some great wind so it should be good. I'll let you know how it went. Ty

Posts: 120 Location: Chicago, IL | So Ty... all of this computer activity during the season must mean that you got DSL or something other than what you used to have? We are coming up June 23-26 so make sure you come over for some beers from the tapper. Dan Hardy

Dan, I wouldn't miss the back hall tappers for anything. Yeah we did get DSL. I got tired of looking at the weather channel to see what happened last week. Got out at 1:30 today and caught a 44 incher on the first cast. Caught one other small one also at about 3:00. All in all we had five fish hit and one other follow in about five hours of fishing. I had a little trouble concentrating on my figure eight and really screwed one up on the Pacemaker. It's pretty windy right now so I'm guessing it is going to be really windy tomorrow. Should be even better. Ty

Good to hear you are nailing some fish Dave. I had a half day tonight and we only saw one nice sized fish. Had some good company and awsome weather. We were right behind Tanner on a couple spots and he caught two and saw a few others. He said he had twenty follows today. Guess I should have been out there all day or cut him off on a few spots. I'm cutting a hole in his net tonight. I did go out for an hour mid-day and had an upper forty inch follow the whole way in but no taker. Calling for some rain tomorrow so could be a real doozy of a day. Ty

Been gone for a while but am back to the big Chip now. Slow day Monday. We saw one small one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Had a few other fish hit, but no telling what they were. Morning fish was on a Pacemaker and the other was on a bucktail. Got pushed off the lake early due to bad weather in the evening. I was really hoping to get in some evening fishing with topwater, but no such luck. Had some great people out though that were patient with the slow fishing. Jeanie(sp?), sorry for the wet night! I thought we would see a lot more fish than we did. The water temps are low to mid 70's. We had quite a bit of rain last night so the temps may have gone down a couple degrees, but they should go right back up today. Ty

The last two days I was out were the 1st and 2nd of july. We didn't see many fish but caught three with one being 41 inches. The winds were extremely high and I want to thank my clients for sticking it out. Most of the other clients that were out with guides went in early. We took a lot of waves over the side of the boat, but it was worth it. I love high winds, but they are a challenge none the less. I've been gone for a week on a fishing trip with some friends so now I'll get back to posting on a regular day to day again. Ty

Got back from Canada at about 5:00 pm and went out fishing from 7:30 till dark. Caught and lost a few big pike right away on Bootails. At sundown I boated a big fat 43" fish on a Rough Runner. There were a bunch of shiners busting the surface right where it hit. The water temps were 73 to 75 degrees. They came down a little from a week ago. Hope the fishing is good tonight because Tanner and I are filming with the Badfish crew. Ty

Filmed with Tanner for a couple hours tonight and watched him muff one on a Pacemaker just before sundown. If the object was to keep the bait away from the fish, Tanner did awsome!! At least it was on film so we have proof. Way to go pal! Not much else happening out there. Beautiful night though. I'll be on the water all day tomorrow so hopefully it goes good. Ty

Hey Ty, Haven't seen you around all summer. I have been seeing a bunch of fish but can't get many to eat. Have seen a couple of dandies though. Was'nt up this past weekend and won't be up this weekend. I will be coming up next weekend for 10 days, stop over and I will have a couple of goodies for you. I see it is relatives time up there?

Big Pike Only, find the fresh main lake weeds right now. Some of the back bays are just too warm. The water is dropping fast with this heat so hit the outside weed edges. Scott, I'll stop in when you are up. Give me a call so I know you are here. Family should be here for two weeks so I'll be over at the resort anyway. Ty

7/12 report Put in a long day with only one small one in the baot. Eight other follows, but nothing over 40 inches. Most were in thick weeds. 7/13 report Fish were pretty active for the weather we had. It was hot and flat calm. We caught three, but again no size to them. Saw or lost four others. Biggest was in the low forties. Water temps are in the upper seventies. All were in fresh weeds. Ty

Any kind of night bite going on the Chip.? (other than the mosquitoes)
Ty Sennett |

Been catching fish every day this week with the exception of last night. Not a lot of follows, but boated six fish in the last four days. Probably saw another 12 or so that followed. They are going after a variety of different baits from Bootails to pacemakers and everything else in between. Water is low right now, but it doesn't seem to matter. Water temps are in the high seventies today. Ty Scott, the night bite is starting in some. Most of the big fish lately have come right after sundown. Last night looked really good as far as weather goes, but only one follow. We're catching a lot of low thirty inch fish during the day. We don't see many of the bigger fish during midday. Maybe the water is too warm or something. I'll bet by the end of this week we start seeing more big fish with the full moon coming. Ty
