Location: Angola, IN | I made it out of bed to write this message from my wheel chair. My eyes are welled up as I write this:
I know I've pissed off my fair share of people on all the boards, especially here. And I'm dumb founded by the support and encouragement that you all have given me. It means more to me than you can imagine. This was a horrible wreck....an automobile accident that I don't know how I survived. But I came away with no real head trauma. I was lucky to have only broke my ankle, legs, knee caps, several ribs, and pelvis. I also lacerated many internal organs (lungs, spleen, and lungs)....and I have a few trips to the dentist to make to top it all off. I'm serious when I say that I am lucky.
This accident will forever change my view/attitude on life....
This accident will forever haunt me and I pray that I never forget the impact that it has had on all involved. Everyone be safe when they travel.
The support that I received from the fishing community was overwhelming....despite my best attempt at pissing people off. My point-of-view about my opinion vs. others feelings has definately changed. I thank every single one of you for your thoughts, prayers, letters, cards, and lures. I am lucky to have such friends. I received blessing from all over the country.....because of a shared interest in this stupid fish.....just incredible!!!!
I had a son 6 weeks ago.....Harrison August Hulbert. He's with me now and keeps me up through this all.
I have a long road ahead and every day I pray that God gives me the strength to help me through this. Kind of funny how people (myself) gain some humility and God-conscious when they find themselves completely defeated and powerless. As my sponsor once told me: Religion is for people afraid to go to Hell, and Spirituality is for people who have been there." My days have never been darker and I hope that God will help me through this mess.
Special Thanks to: ERC (Matt), Mikie, Mauser, Komer, Todd Minor, Jeff Kachmann, Gene Dahl, Dave Vandoorn, Marc Thorpe, Ben Smetana, and John Deutinger....and a few I'm sure I've forgotten. You guys rock!!

In spite of what you think your reputation is (was) just remember...... even the coldest enemy of yours (if you even have one) could not help smiling about your adventure in the little rental boat on Webster when you caught a fish and fell in!  That story still brings a smile to my face!
I appreciate the help you've given me as a musky newbie from about two years back. You and Tom and Mike have all been very accomodating and patient helping me understand what I need to be doing when pursuing the musky.
I agree wholeheartedly with your perspective while in the midst of such a trial as you are facing. God takes the vilest of circumstances and can bring about such an unimaginable good. I've experienced it myself. One last thing.... A wise ole' pastor friend once told me, "Steve, you'd worry a lot less about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do!" (heh heh!) It helps me not take myself so seriously.

This whole experience is definately something that will change your life forever, but do not let it become something that takes over your life. Your injuries will heal and you need to make sure your heart and soul mend as well. Move on get out fishing when you can, spend as much precious time with your family especially your little one and life will be good to you. I'm really proud of you and all of the members on the boards for their compassion and respect when it comes to events like this and even small things like my back surgery, it really helps one's spirit to know there are many people most of whom we might not ever meet in person giving us words of kindness. My family and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers while you are on the mend. One day at a time my friend and you will get back into the swing of things. I don't have to tell you this but your famliy ( especially those brothers of yours ) and your friends love you very much. Your accident has made me look at the family and friends that I have aroung me and has given me and the rest of us a new appreciation for the blessings that life affords us. Stay strong, rely on your family and friends. In time you'll be back sticking a fatty.

Congrat's on your new son! Teach him well and hold him close to your heart, our time on this earth is limited and each miniute should not be wasted.

| Steve, get better soon dude. Any time you need a boat partner in Indiana, there is always room in the Tuffy for ya. I too have a little one and another on the way. I know that your children are the biggest motivation one could ever have to get back on your feet again. Location: minocqua, wi. | Steve: just stopped into the office this morning to check and see what's up and so happy to see the update is from you directly. been thinking about you and your family this week and waiting to see how you had been doing. now that i know you're typing and that you have a son, i will worry for you no more. he's the one that will keep the darkness away from you! i'm going through a very different situation that brought dispair into my life recently and because of that i guess i've thought about you so much because i know what it is to be at the bottom. these same people encouraging you, encouraged me and it's a fraternity like no other. i think if you piss this group off, they'll just love you and be there for you more ....

Good to see your on the road to the good life. Family, Friends and God will help you along the way. You will be looking back at this in the future and see how lucky you were. I don't know about the accdent but from your injury list your lucky to be alive.

Your accident has touched us all. Believe that.
I was out with my brother for the opener last Saturday and we talked all day about how lucky our family has been to all live withing 5 miles of each other. 5 kids in all and all would do anything for each other at the drop of a dime. We are all very close and lean on each other when needed. The power of family is very strong. I can only hope someone who is reading this might rethink of a small issue that is keeping there family apart. Don't let anything keep family apart. Blood is forever, the other issues will pass. I am glad to here your brothers are there and strong for you. I know how special that is.
Get your but better and lets get on the water sometime. I have met you a few times and e-mailed a bunch of times about all kinds of things. Lets keep the faith and get better, you have alot of chasing around to do when that boys starts to crawl, walk, and run. Life is what you make of it. Make the most of it.................God bless you and your whole family. |

We're all pulling for you and I do have to say that I feel your pain. I had a snowmobile accident 2 years ago with 10 broken ribs, had my spleen removed, kidney injury and an open pelvis fracture. God has a way of putting into perspective that which is really important. I don't pretend to understand why certain things happen but we all can take away the daily appreciation of a loving God, caring spouse and the constant love and support of family and friends. This is a speedbump in the road of life and I pray that be able to recover as quickly and fully as I was blessed to. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any wish at [email protected]. |

One of the first things I thought of when I heard about your accident was what you told me last year at Tom's house - that your wife was expecting a baby this spring. Glad all that went well, if you needed a reason before he's lookin at you now. I can't wait to see his first fish! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
