Frank Walsh at Baystore Resort has been doing a cool thing to inspire and motivate his visitors..... he calls it the 50 Inch Club. Its a coveted clique that all who stay at Frank's want to join, however the only way into the club is to catch a 50 inch or better fish while staying there.

Considering how easy it is to post pictures on M1st, perhaps each season we could start a thread with pictures and stories of all the 50's caught by MuskieFIRST members??? Usually they all get posted at one point or another.... but this might be a neat way to keep them all in one place for our viewing pleasure???

So who wants to start one for 2004???

I was even thinking about a 500"+ group. Catching only 50" muskies to get to 500"+? What do you think, I even have a guy who would make up some cool t-shirts?

Hmmm... the T-Shirt thing might not be a bad idea. Perhaps the prestige of having a T-Shirt that says "Member of the MuskieFIRST 50 Inch Club" to wear to the winter musky expos would become the Thing Ta Do?

Although... I was thinking more like a compendium of big fish PICTURES all in one place. Sure, we'd still have the Monthly Photo Contest threads.... but I was thinking this could compliment that. Maybe have a MEMBERS LIST at the top of the thread paying tribute to those fortunate enough to meet or exceed the 50 inch mark??

Perhaps this should be done in the photo alblum instead of on the Discussion Board???

Or... maybe have a Silver and Gold club? Silver being fish between 45 and 49 inches and gold being those 50 and larger? Or maybe even have a Bronze club for first muskies and/or fish from 40 to 45 inches???

I don't know... just seems that there are a lot of awesome photos put on this forum that get lost. I'd like to accumulate them in ONE location for easier viewing.... especially during the long winter months when admiring big fish pictures helps ease the pains of Cabin Fever.

Is this a dumb idea or not????

I like it... wish I had a pic of my 50 [sniff]

A central area for all fish pic's is a good idea... there are some great shots on here that are tough to find after a couple day/weeks...

This is a great idea. Zach has been working on a similar concept this summer, and is almost ready to launch the idea. More on this when I get back from the MWC Championship in Exciting Prairie Du Chien, WI!

I think the deal should be

50"er and/or 30#er

I always had two major goals, a 50"er or a 30#er. Got my 30, she was 48". Looikng to get the 50" now. Still, a 30# ski is a monster, and easily as much a trophy as a 50" fish.

Me, I want it on a pacth for my M1 jacket.

How about 54 1/2" platinum? I think this is a great idea, and I am thinking we ought to extend it to the 500 Inch Club. Have two levels or something like that. It would be fun at the shows, and YES, I agree, there should be a level for 40-44"ers too.

Just 1 cent worth,
Donnie

I'd vote for 2 levels Platinum 55+ and Gold 50 . . . This is a 50" club we're talking about right?? So, we shouldn't set the line below that. A 43" fish is nice but really nothing special and a 49" is closer but isn't the 50" mark the magical mark we all seek?

I like what Marine_1 said. This is a 50 inch club we're talking about.

Not that fish under 50 aren't special..... but if they need recognition we can always have a 40 inch club as well.

50" is the magic number. Should we have a contest for the T-Shirt design?? Or should we just throw up ideas??

Never have been able to figure out how 50 inches became the magic number. 4'2" s??????????? I'll take a four footer anyday. 48 inch plus has always been a big fish in my mind.

As a UK piker I cannot see the magic 50" thing either.Weight is surely the most reliable measure. Not wishing to detract from muskiehounds 50" in the photo comp but it is a thin as a rake and obviously seen much better days, yet would gain more kudos than a nice fat 48"er that could have weighed 10lb more. I suppose that we all have our own standards to work with but weight is the yardstick that I work to.

Everyone has their own idea of what a "special" musky is. For some, it's a fish over 40". For others, it's a fish over 50 pounds. Depends on how much you fish, and where you fish.

But the 50" mark has been the standard that most musky guys seek for a long, long time. Heck yeah, a 48" is a special fish, but so is a 47" and a 46". But when you start to get into the 50's, that's when most guys start to pay attention. I don't know why, it's just the way it's been.....way before I even knew what a musky was......way before I was even born.

50" has always been the goal.

Good idea, but there has to be a final say as to who's in and who's out. A couple of judges view submitted pics and they decide. Without judges, you're gonna end up with nothing but fighting and bickering as to what's a 50 and what's not.

IMHO IMHO IMHO

the idea of a "50 Inch Club" is a good one...but i'd suggest keeping it as a "roll of honor" or picture hall of fame of sorts as a section of the website. the original posting in this thread suggested it as a place to check out pictures of 50 inch fish caught by M1st members.

or at least do it in a more subtle way than bold patches on the coat sleeves...perhaps the idea of a t-shirt is a better way to go. the guys who wander around the winter musky shows with 15 star patches on their sleeves for "50 inch releases" always come across as a bit self-aggrandizing to me.

and ultimately, for it to be official, it's up to M1st and not the "oppression of the majority".

but...to each his own. this is coming from someone who is still just dreaming of a 50-incher to release.
it's great to be proud of hard-earned accomplishments. i think we're all just well-served to remember the perceptions we give off to others - i'd rather be a "Barry Sanders" than a "Terrell Owens" if you know what i'm saying...

Steve, I don't know how old you are but the 50 inch thing started in early 80's. When I started Muskie fishing it was a four footer that was considered a trophy. I may be wrong but have caught my fair share and it has always seemed that in general 48 inches is when Muskies start getting the flat head and start to widen out. From what I've seen there is more of a difference between a 46 - 48 than a 48 - 50. Of course my experience is mostly Canada and Mn. may be different elsewhere. We could argue about this forever, just always bugged me when this 50 inch thing came up. Don't know who or why it started.

OK... OK...OK...

I don't know what Steve W. is working on... but when I started this thread it was a simple idea.... as Lambeau described. No patches. No shirts. No trophies. Just some personal pride over an accomplishment. If someone wants to lie for personal gratification... go ahead.

As for the 50 inch mark.... geez. Its just a general standard. Just like the infamous 10 Pointer in deer hunting. Obviously there will be those that take it to the next level and start scoring their racks by the inch, etc etc. No doubt there are some giant 8 pointers out there that will dwarf a 10 pointer.... but you get the idea. Shooting a "10 pointer" has always been a traditional milestone for many hunters... just as boating a 50 inch musky has been for many musky hunters.

Those BIG fish catches that don't actually measure 50 inches will still get displayed and recognized on MuskieFIRST. But... to make the 50 inch club... its gotta be 50. A super fat, freak-of-nature 49.5 incher won't do it!!!!

IMHO, 50" is the pinnacle. By putting this in prospective, there has not been, to date, an official 50" fish caught on the Madison Chain. Now the same 49.5 fish has been caught 3 times if I'm correct. My ultimate goal was a 50"er, before that a 40"er, before that a legal, and before that a MUSKY, so.......... the trophy is in the eye of the beholder. Also coming from a guy that caught a 10"er too

Yes 50 is today's magic # and this should only be a picture and story thing. Keep it simple. Forget the wears thing. We're musky men, not ego sensitive sissies! A pic, a good story, some beers, you know--guy stuff. We all will know who has caught what--overt broadcasting akin to today's twisted media is not necessary for us REAL MEN! Lets keep musky lore just that. That's my opinion in the no spin zone......JK
