I was just thinking, what are some of the reasons that would cause any of you to hang it up for the day. I know that it could be other obligations, or weather, or demanding bosses, but if you could fish for 14 hours, or better yet 20 hours for the day, at what point do you say, I'm done, let's hang it up for the night.

The reason I ask, is that on Saturday, my brother in law and I hit the water from 6 in the morning, and got off of the water at 11 at night. We hit 5 different lakes, saw 13 fish, and caught 3, then at about 11, we said, that's enough. We could have stayed longer, but the need to stay just ended.

What are some of the reasons you have. The fish aren't going, you're tired, etc.

Caught enough fish. Other things to do. Time to take the kids to the zoo. Stuff like that.

Short fat guys whining that the beer is gone and his feet are swelling cause he has the "gout"

"Oh My god my feet hurt!"

Also laughing too hard from the "Chickinboat" and the flies have had a factor....

running out of daylight (which could be helpful when you have to walk back to the car through the woods and the soil is full of holes to break your legs in), thoughts of driving home for about 1-2 hours, not being able to see where you put your feet in the water (we wade a lot along the shoreline of lakes and in drains), a tired fishing buddy (of course when he's driving! LOL), never because we catch too much (like that ever happens ... yeah right! LMAO!)

Recreational traffic! The biggest muskie buzz kill there ever was. Pretty tough to fish past 11:00am on the weekends in town. Perfect time to go home and take a nap. Family obligations also take a higher priority:).

Boat traiffic, No Fish, mood yes mood, sometimes and I hate to say it you just want to get the heck out of there you know. You see that same fish in that same spot following that same lure. Or, that same 400 pound women on that same dock in that same two piece bathing suit. LOL or even that same lady screaming that the same 400 pound women is underdresses. Oh wait thats on Bass Lakes

Naturally if you run out of beer it's time to stop fishing.

Might have to go get some more and go back out though.

Too many "recreation boaters" might do it.

Get a call that the wife is going into labor...didn't happen but could have.

Dad or wife gets a hook in them.

Skeeters are the cut off on LOTW.

Biting flies might do it too....I've had pretty good luck with yard guard though.

Very few things can consistantly get me off the water once I am there. I have found that lightning arcing from my rodtip to my head tends to get my attention!.......sometimes.......if I haven't seen a muskie in the last three casts........

Wifester standing on the bank w/ a jungle penetrator(12 gauge)...forgetting me gear...someone using a microwave close by, setting off the govt plastic in me head, causing me to shoot the craft into the tree line...losing all me baits to snags/trees/docks...running out of Coke Colas and Pay Days...forgetting to put line on me reels...just a few of many reasons I spend most of each day curled up in a ball on the kitchen floor...

For me I have been up since 2:30am and it's getting dark. Fishing usually drops off then anyway and I won't see my bed untill about 1am. Other things that will keep me off, if it gets up past 90. Screw that, not fun anymore. If I have the kids in the boat, the skeeters or a storm will get me off the lake.

I think that Jonesi and Cady have great points. But JoMusky brings up a great solution. I know that running out of beer can do it, but you need to be familiar with the area to prevent such disasters. Also, you can call in additional fishing partners to reload the livewell.
If I loose both of my arms, I will attach a set of jumper cables to my body to help me hold on tighter, and use my long ole monkey legs for netting capacity.
Only 8 more hours, and a great night on the water with no boats. This night fishing stuff rocks!!!!!

When my arms are too tired to hold my rod and the water I'm fishing is too small to troll.
Only other reason I can think of is that I'm tired of listening to Mikie brag about catching fish when I'm not!!!

Heat. 90 and up. I've had heat stroke a few times and it isn't fun.

Storms. The other day my fishing partner and I were watching a storm approach. We were doing the old let's wait until it gets closer deal. I then looked at him and said you know this is really stupid. We are basically waiting for a close shot of lightening to move us out of here.
He stated "Well, when you put it that way ....."

I simply don't get off the water till I have to. Example: Got up today at 3:30 am, fished till 9:30 tonight. I simply couldn't cast any more.

Many, Many, Many 17 hour days on the water..... But that is what this sport is all about.
