Heading up to Vilas County this weekend for a family vacation for a week. I've fished up here before but first time bringing the family. Can I get some recommendations for fun family stuff as well as good places to eat? I want to hit a couple of the better supper clubs, fish fry's, etc. that may or may not be off the beaten path. Also, any attractions to keep the kiddies (and wives) entertained.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Pub N Prime - St.Germain
Club 155 - Sayner
Fibbers - St. Germain
Bent's Camp - Land O Lakes (on the Cisco Chain)
Black Bear Inn - Little St. Germain
Guide's Inn - Boulder Junction

These are just a few resturaunts. I highly suggest a trip up to both Bent's Camp and Guide's Inn, they're both worth it.

If your wife can't find any shopping to do in Eagle River, she's blind, it's a tourist trap.

If you really feel like exploring, take a trip into the UP on 45 and go see the Paulding Light

When in Eagle River take the kids to Guides Choice takle shop, They have a huge aquarium there and usually have a big Muskie or two in it along with walleye, bass, perch etc.
A good place to eat in Eagle River is Captain Nemos just down the road from Guides Choice, both are owned by Rick Kruger

like Gander Mt Guide says if your wife can't find shopping in Eagle River she's blind

Try to hit Weasles with yourself and a buddy when the wives are shopping. Just make sure not to take the kids there. They may not be ready for it yet.

I would also hit Blink Bonnies as said below. It is a cool place, and great food. (You may even run into Xllund there)

MUST:
McGreggor Blink Bonnies, at hwy 70 and C, across the street from the golf course (White Tail Inn?). Great Steaks and seafood. There is ia window behind the entire bar where deer will come up and feed. Have a bloody mary and let the kiddies watch the deer eat. Right next door is a nine hole course with a nice miniature golf course (the lodge there has a ton of video games for the kids). Usually the wait at Blink Bonnies is a couple hours, so play golf while you wait, or get there early. We NEVER miss a dinner there when we go up for a weekend.

Another Must:
Clearview Lodge on Big St.
Saturday night is prime rib night..........excellent. Great food, video games for the kids while you wait to be seated......so if you plan on fishing Big St., dock at the resort and have dinner. Great people.

Da Vinchi's Hillside restaurant on Hwy N. just south of Star Lake may be a good choice. Besides excellent food they have a 2-way mirror in the dining room where they feed deer, bear and other wildlife on the other side of the mirror. It's pretty cool to eat your dinner 15 feet from a bear without it knowing.

ditto on Blink Bonnies....

Great pizza - Sayner Pub in Sayner

Friday night fish....a bit of a road trip but extremely worth it - Pope's - located on Lower Gresham Lake - from 51 North turn West on Gresham Lake Rd. (white Pope's arrow sign points the way)

Jim Peck's Wildwood is a nice private zoo on 70 West of Minoqua.

I heard the 19th Hole by Blink Bonnies has a good garlic pizza?

The go carts between Rollie's and Minoqua on 51 are the best I've ridden up there.

Mama's Italian Restaurant on 70 West of Minoqua is good too.

Spange's in St. German is good for italian and have all u can eat spagetti on Saturday nights.

Stop Rodd Umlauf's Studio in Lake Tomahawk....great deals on his artwork.

I second Weasil's.

Also add The Frontier to the list.

Again, this is for the big boys only, leave the wife and kids at home !

For a great Fri. nite fish fry- try the Honey Bear Inn on the N. side of Hwy. 70 between Eagle River and St. Germain. Suggest you make reservations, it's always packed, for a good reason...

So far, I have to go along whole heartedly with what Commanche Jim & JoMusky have recommended.

And yes, there is a strong possiblility that you will run into me at Blink Bonnies as Tuffy1 has stated earlier. You know, after a long day on the water chasing muskies, there is nothing like a great steak and a Whiskey Old Fashion (or two or three) to rejuvinate the body!

My picks would be:
Clearview Lodge for the fish fry
Blink Bonnies
Country Flaire (great breakfast spot, just outside of St. Germain towards Eagle River on Rt. 70)
Spangs

I have to go and get a snack, all this talk of food has gotten to me! Have fun up there!

Add another vote for Blink Bonnie's.
I've also gotten good food and had some good beer at the Minoqua Brewery. Overlooks the lake too, so you can watch all the other guys not catching fish either.
I've been to most of the other places listed and none of them are bad suggestions.
If you are fishing north of Eagle River on North Twin there used to be a bar there called the Hooten Bar. They had great burgers but it's been a while since I was there. Maybe the King of North Twin, SVL, will chime in on this too.

Stop by Heckels. Every accessory one can imagine. Hang on to your wallet, easy to spend money in that place. As easy as Weasles, just different.

I would do some canoeing on the Wisconsin River by Eagle River or there is a good place on #51 north of Manitowish Waters. I also like to stop by St. Germaine flee makt. on Monday morning7-8am- I think it goes on till 1pm ? Good stock car races around Eagle River- Tomahawk or Norway Mi. There might be more around the area. County fairs are starting around the state. Rent a Pontoon on the Chain for 4 hours. Stop at local chamber of Commerce- but the Wisconsin state tourist centers would be better. See some water falls in Michigan. Have some fun. Roy

Gander Mt Guide - 7/13/2004 8:50 AM

Pub N Prime - St.Germain
Club 155 - Sayner
Fibbers - St. Germain
Bent's Camp - Land O Lakes (on the Cisco Chain)
Black Bear Inn - Little St. Germain
Guide's Inn - Boulder Junction

Just a couple notes FYI. Club 155 name has changed and is now known as Scoobies. Black Bear stopped serving food this year.
Also, the Outdoorsman in Boulder is a good breakfast/lunch place and plenty of shops in the area for the ladies to enjoy.
For the kids you may want to consider Elmer's Fun Park that has a neat go-kart track and horse riding stable. St. Germain flea market is usually fun for everyone to check out for an hour (goes until 3:00 pm but the best time to go is probably before 1:00)
Stop by the Chamber office at the corner of 70 and 155 to check on any local events going on.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Wolf pack cafe in downtown St. Germain for breakfast. Get there early. We were up there a few weeks ago and the Crystal lake beach on N west of Sayner was one of the nicest ones we've been to if the lake you stay on isn't good for swimming. Two great ice cream shops one in town and the other one by the mini golf course on Hwy 70. A nice perc in St. germain is the gas discount you get by buying certain items in Camps grocery store. We paid $2.72 a gal when the gas prices were $3.11 elsewhere.

If the kids like to ride bikes there is a paved bike trail from Boulder Junction down M to Cty N to Sayner down 155/C to Hwy 70 into St. Germain. They were almost done with the paving on 70 when we were last up there 2 weeks ago.

Log Cabin Bar on 45 in Conover, 6 miles north of eagle River, best pizza on the planet!!!

Star lake bar (??) on cty K west of Conover, always had a great time a great meal there. Bartender did some cool magic tricks, think it was Chuck Altomore, hes a musky guide too so might engage in some ski conversation.
