Does anyone know where you can pick up Knipex bolt cutters in the Chicago area? Also, which type is best? Thanks.

Posts: 336 Location: Wheeling, IL. | Should be able to by a set at Muskyhunter.com. Jim Saric just brought a bunch to a class where he was a guest speaker. Sold them for $20.00. It is a great set.

Thanks. I was there yesterday and they didn't have any. The only bolt cutters they had were Wiss and Klein Tool. They had some Knipex pliers, but no bolt cutters. Since they are so high quality, I wonder why they are so hard to find.

To clarify, I was at Berlyns yesterday.

The regualr ones work grest for me, haven't tried the spring one yet. Other places you can try are Sears(some of their stores are starting to carry some Knipex stuff, not sure if they would have the bolt cutters though), Grainger, Graybar, Steiner, or Efengee electric. The supply house places may have to order them and may not be as cheap as Berlands. Also, Clark and Barlow downtown on Grand av may also carry them.

I just ordered a pair of bolt cutters from Musky Hunter. They said they are the same ones Jim Saric uses. They aren't Knipex though, they are Great Neck or something similar. They said they work very well. I'll give them a try. Thanks.

Posts: 7087 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | No offense to Musky Hunter, but those great neck bolt cutters are much cheaper than Knipex for a reason. They are definitely a two handed cutter, and will get bent and become very inneffective quickly. I have 2 pairs I dont use anymore because of these reasons.

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Esox Angler magazine sells Knipex. Actually they have the 8" Cobalt at $45.00 and the high leverage center cutters for $42.00. www.esoxangler.com The M.H. cutters just dont last. I love M.H. to death, but that's an "iffy" product. Posts: 259 Location: Alexandria, MN | Those great neck and whatever other brands are out there, are OK when new, but they are more of a "disposable" item. The jaws will get dammaged if you need to cut any heavy duty hooks, and they will also twist and not lineup correctly any more. You will spend less money in the long run with the Knipex, BUT the cheap ones are better than nothing -- always carry something to cut those hooks. I carry 2 sets of Knipex, and usually have 4 or 5 of the cheap ones. Kind of hand them out to anybody that needs them around me. $8 to save a fish! Steve

Posts: 285 | ebay delivers. Got a knipex for about $15 (used but cut hooks just fine) and a 2 no-name compound bolt cutters for $15. The other work well too, I gava one of the generic ones away to a guy that was trying to use wire cutters. Later, papa joe

Posts: 75 Location: ft wayne, IN | Yes knipex is the only cutter worth having in my opinion. Esox Angler sells them #715-638-2311. The shorter ones -- 8 inch are the best. They'll last you for years and will cut through any hook like butter. The higher cost is well worth it in performance and longevity. JK

Posts: 283 | I bought some small bolt cutters at harbor freight for like $5-8. I know you get what you pay for but they've cut many hooks for me. They probably aren't near as nice as knipex but could be a nice backup considering release tools don't float ![]() Edited by Tigerhunter 12/23/2013 12:05 PM
