Heading down next weekend......or at least I think I am. Want to go back to Kincaid, but this would be a much closer trip and a new lake would be fun too.

Haven't heard anything but I know the ice is out, and the water may have went up with the rain last week. Here is a website that updates daily (I think) with the water levels, Shelbyville is at the bottom and if I am reading it right I think it is only up 2 foot: http://mvs-wc.mvs.usace.army.mil/dresriv.html I'd say launch at 9th street or Lithia depending on where your staying..but of course that is also based on you fishing the south portion of the lake, I don't know where to go there in the spring.

Shelbyville right now is 3 feet above winter pool. Was out yesterday and had a tough day. Water temps were 41-42 on the south end. This week thing should start to pick up with the warmer weather on the way starting on Thursday. Will be down there this weekend and will give update when I return.

Love these boards, so much info being shared. Like Buckeyesfan, I too will be down there this weekend and will give a full report even with or without success. Last weekend water temps were about 44-47 near Wolf.

On another note, anyone know of any key areas/techniques to employ on Shelbyville early in the year? Shelby hasn't been very generous to us in the spring. Should we be fishing north, like Wolf/Eagle/or even past the Findaly bridge vs. the Lithia Springs area? Thanks!

Fished the spillway on Saturday. It was slow to say the least.
One of my buddys got a 34 incher. Other than a snagged carp, it was the only fish that I saw caught all day.

Thad,
Would you mind revealing the secret bait? Also, were you guys walking the gravel shoreline, the poured (smooth) concrete at the foot of the dam, or under and past the bridge? Thanks!

I was down there last Thursday evening for a few hours. No follows and none in the net. More water now compared to last year at this time. Could not fish the concrete effectively due to higher water level. There really would be no way to net one there if I hooked one and the risk of slipping in the cold water and heavy current trying to net one with nobody else around was too great for me. I did really good there last year in spring/early summer. Gliders and jigs worked the best for me. Don't overlook hair as the water warms and cranks take their share of fish too. I heard that a 49 1/2 was caught and kept from there a couple of weeks ago. Thad, did you hear anything about this?

Esox50,
My buddy caught his fish on a Big Game twitchbait.
It was a silver/white'ish color. Aggressive twitching seemed to do the trick on that fish.
Also, he caught the fish just at the end of the concrete steps, where it goes from concrete to rock. He was casting toward the dam, so I think that fish was laying on those steps that are under water.
I hope that helps you catch a pig!!!

Good Luck!

Thad

Haven't beed down myself since last Saturday, but it looks like it's still above winter pool and the Corps is still flushing it out. Shelbyville enthusiasts need to keep this web page handy, and watch the trend every day for a week before you go...

http://mvs-wc.mvs.usace.army.mil/dresriv.html

My guess is it's still muddy as hell all the way through the system since they are still dropping lake level,
which means current should be taken into consideration as well.

I'm heading to Evergreen Saturday and hitting MI Chapter 27's banquest Satuday night. Sunday the temps are supposed to drop again too.

Good luck if you go!

Ok, so we didn't catch anything, or see anything either, but here's my report.

Water Clarity: stained in coves outside of Lithia, muddy as you got further back into Lithia, relatively clear (maybe three to four feet) in Three Fingers Cove.

Water Temp: steady at 44-45 degrees, warmest water was all the way back in Lithia (as far back as possible)

Water Level: don't know the exact number other than it being low, to give you some frame of reference the water didn't even make it to the bridge in Lithia, stopped about 50-75 yards out, Buoy still a couple hundred yards to fill (if at normal pool), lots of water being dumped into spillway

Lures: mainly cranks like 8" Jntd. Believers, Shallow Invaders, ERC Double D, some spinnerbaits like Grim Reaper Hot One white/chart. blades, bass spinnerbaits from black/gold to orange/gold, firetiger rattletrap

Structure: bare banks, main lake and secondary points, gravel and riprap, mud flats, timber/stumps, piers

Weather: Partly cloudy, 40's, northwest winds approx. 15 mph gusting to 25

Other notes: terns or other gull like birds feeding in the back of Lithia in 1 or 2' of water, talked to one other muskie fisherman who said he hadn't caught anything today trolling (3/21) or yesterday (presentation N/A)

Plitzz,
What areas were you fishing, if you don't mind me asking? Also, what color and what kind of glide baits and minnow baits were you throwing? Just want to know what I did wrong and what to do next time I'm faced with those conditions. Thanks!

Nick,
I almost pulled out the 10" Jake clown holo pattern in a desperate attempt to get something going. What kind of structure are you fishing this time of year? Are you concentrating up shallow or out a little deeper (10'+)? Thanks!

plitzzz and I saw two fish in Bouy cove. One was in tha back and the other near the mouth. Plitzzz caugfht his fish off of a boat ramp on a reefhog. Water temps were in the mid 40's. Fishing should have been better but I think the wind really screw things up. Its hard to fish wood when your like a pin ball boncing off trees. This weekend should be better with warmer temps on the way, but the weather man said that it was going to be warm last weekend and was wrong. As usuall. only job in the world you can get paid for to be wrong most of the time. looking forword to getting down there this weekend fishing has to start picking up sooner or later.

Andrew,

Is that Andy Veach? It is Rick Mikel. I do not know if you remember me from Kolars. We have met a few times. If this is you e-mail me at [email protected] or call me on my cell at 630-309-5455. I have been down at Shellbyville the last 2 weekends. I am in a new boat this year a gray and silver 619. I am looking for someone to fish with this weekend myself. I asked Joe Mellot (don't know if I spelled that right) but he has the kids. Call me!

Here's a Shelbyville report for Sunday, March 28:

Water clarity: muddy to stained, visibitity less than two feet in most places, dirtiest water was around Lithia Marina and the boat docks, clearest was found off main lake points

Water temps: 49-61... yes, that's right I said 61 degrees!!!! We marked 51 degrees off a main lake point, then proceeded to the back of the adjacent cove where we hit 61. We found the warmest water in sheltered coves, out of the wind. In these areas we noted a 7-10 degree change from that of the main lake point temps. Just for the record, we were using our transom mounted depthfinder, so it was always in the water and there were no depth changes made with it that might affect the great amount of change we observed.

Wind: south changing to northwest after the front blew in, strong (20+)

Weather: cloudy and rain, air temps in upper 60s-low 70s, dropped dramatically during and after cold front blew through

Water level: low, possibly on the rise due to rain accumulations, depends on if the Corps decide it's necessary to let water out

Structure: flooded timber, boat docks, bare banks, main lake points, stumps

Lures: 10" and 6" Jake, Shallow Invader, Double D, Tiger Tube, 1/2 oz. rattletrap, bass spinnerbait

Other notes: The warmest water held the baitfish, which in turn held the muskie. Had one hit a rattletrap in about 3' of water with baitfish present and water temps about 57-58. Watched a muskie (mid 30") chase baitfish, water temps were about 59.

Not exactly a fishing report, but still Shelbyville related. Is anyone possibly interested in fishing the IMTT Shelbyville event on the 25th? I've got a boat and am looking for a partner. If anyone is interested you can reach me at [email protected].

Any reports lately? Looks like the pool crested and has started to drop slowly. The in-flow has
really slowed and it doesn't sound like they are calling for any heavy rain in the near future. Will
she be clearing up soon?

Any reports after this weekend would be greatly appreciated -- A friend and I are coming down
from MN for Thursday-Saturday next week. Any reports/advise will be appreciated and returned,
after we do our thing.

This is going to be our first trip to Shelbyville -- Anybody have anything they are willing to share?

Thanks,
Steve

I will be out Saturday and Sunday. Whether or not we catch fish I will post a report. Air temps are supposed to drop after the cold front moves in tomorrow. It might make fishing a little on the crappie, I mean crappy side.
