Wow! Sizable chunk it got.

If that happened in Minnesota thereā€™d already be legislation drafted to stop musky stocking.

I could be wrong but the injury doesn't look like what you'd expect from muskie teeth. Wouldn't you think it would be more like razor cuts not big chunks taken out? Although she claims to have seen the fish's head shaking back and forth on her leg. Either way, that had to hurt a bit.

That was my thought as well. Those wounds look more like I would expect from an otter. I watched a family of otter tear into a school of bluegills off my dock one day. Impressive teeth, powerful jaws. One of the adults surfaced with a hand sized blue gill about 10 feet away, one bite and it was cut in half. Could hear the bones crunch.

Looking at the bite radius I can say this is no boating accident. They should close the beaches until this killer is caught

My first thought was an otter. The eye and mind could see anything with a bit of imagination.

I'm glad the Musky let the woman go to fight another day and reach her true potential! Since the fish didn't take a selfie and did a quick release in the warm water I'm confident there won't be delayed mortality.

Side Note- Does this mean there will be legislation to increase the stocking of people to supplement the loss due to predation?

The way muskie jaws and teeth work I don't see anyway they could leave that wound. I'm a dumbass I have my share of musky teeth related injurys. They are clean like a scalpel and no capacity to clamp and dig like that. That wound is ragged cut and has flesh dug out. I don't care if it was a 7 footer who hit my leg over and over, I would have deep slices and puncture woulds. Had to be an otter or some other mammal. Just doesn't look to be in the capacity of a north American freshwater fish.

She should call Jeremy wade up so he can come with a 1950s bait caster and his hunk o fish method

This. Plus the source is a bit out of what I'd call main stream.

Hmmmm....are you suggesting she self-inflicted the wounds and made up the story?

I doubt self inflicted but maybe covering up for something else that happened to her. Or its a muskie. Who knows? Not really my problem but the story is a little far fetched.

Why, should we be? Or maybe a creative piece by the publication?

I've had hundreds if not thousands of muskie cuts over 52 years of chasing muskies, some dandies, too and that set of wounds looks very odd and out of character for a 'muskie bite'. Also, consider the angle of the wounds and a large muskie's physiology, the position the limb would have to be in, and it's quite a story. Anything is possible, but the big chunks are very odd, there should be small and large slashes everywhere.

I have caught hundreds of muskies up to 55" on soft plastics and I always examine the bite marks left in the plastics.  The big holes don't look anything like muskie teethe.  Just my opinion but I think something else happened to that woman that didn't involve a muskie.

I do understand why people would be cynical, but since she would have probably been madly shaking her legs while panicking, would int it be normal for the resulting wounds to look more like a unidentifiable mess and less like the clear jaw marks you see on baitfish?

No scratches. There's like a hundred teeth that should have put scratches all around the area. When I was a kid seining creek chubs, we got a beaver tangled up in a net, and it took a chunk out of my buddy's leg, that looked a lot like that wound.

Yeah there should not be isolated areas with big holes.  Her skin should be shredded all around where those big chunks are located if it was a muskie bite.

Love the Quint image

No doubt at all that it is a muskie - if you fish that area you would have no doubt either.

The Jeremy Wade part of the story is there are some resident geese that feed on the old Minaki Lodge lawn grounds that are mowed right down to the water's edge and the geese walk down to water to drink and loaf (adjacent to where this happened). I'm sure all of the goslings (that are left) are full size now, but my guess is probably why this muskie sampled the lady's leg.

We are going to back to try for "Jaws" in a couple weeks, plus some other nice ones we came across last week... We were there when it happened -- Peter Barber from Barber's Lodge where were staying was telling us that he hoped this story doesn't get out - with you guys being stuck down south they are relying mostly on Manitoba family vacation types, so they don't want to frighten them with this kind of thing happening.

Not an otter, not a snapping turtle (which could happen) and not a bear with a snorkel - it was a muskie.

Now that is funny

I think for Barber et al, it is too late, the story is in several Internet newspapers

Minaki was being pounded this weekend boy!! Hopefully was just a coincidence due to the fact it was a long weekend. But sure was alot of boats chucking considering no Americans. And ya I sure do know how big the skis can get here. The same size as they can on lotw!! I sure hope people down come trying to chase a unicorn. Minaki gets thumped as it is. And it fishes small.

Anyone who's seen a sucker get t-boned will tell you that there is no way it was a muskie bite. Every sucker I've seen after getting bit by our prized critter left clear imprint resembling a jaw of a muskie. If anything I would be more worried about staph infection and put that lady on high dose of antibiotics. That would explain deep round wounds and dark colored flash, common symptom of flash eating bacteria such as staph.

Although after closely looking at the picture around those two big wounds there is a u shaped mark and a cut just southwest of the wound which actually resembles those seen on a sucker. Maybe a muskie bite which led to infection?

https://nypost.com/2020/08/01/woman-gets-pulled-underwater-by-muskie... Here is a picture from same incident which clearly looks like a muskie bite. The other picture is probably from another bite which led to infection and those two big wounds. Man, must have been a big one and hungry.

This might be for another topic but do Muskie female have maternal instinct and get protective of their young like mammals? I'm assuming it might be too late in a season to protect their eggs. Many fish species use their mouths to protect their eggs or small offspring from larger predators, so called mouthbrooders. I don' think that a Muskie mouth would be a hospitable place to hang around but it proves that fish do actually protect their young. Just curious if it might have been a trigger for that attack.
