Looks like it. Backwaters on the Pelican are frozen, can't remember it ever happening this early, and no warm up in sight.

As long as there's no heavy snow in iron county, I'll have tipups in that week

I was just out looking at job on a small lake near home (about 35 miles south of Ashland). It was half covered with ice. I assume that by next weekend even some of the bigger lakes will have ice.

I have had ice in the birdbath for a week. Fortunately I don't fish in the birdbath.

Years ago, when young, dumb and immortal, did late season duck hunting in Meadow Valley and wearing waders crossed a number of ponds with only an inch or less of ice. You do a slide/shuffle to lessen impact. We stayed close to shore so if we did go through it was just a pain getting out, not over the top. But, I would not recommend going out on that little ice if it is deep enough you can stand up and drink.

Really depends where you are fishing. The smaller lakes by me in Oneida County are skimmed over, noticed today that even the river west of Eagle River, by the intersection of 17 and 70, was half iced over. Jenny Weber lake along Hwy 17 between Eagle River and Rhinelander was completely skimmed over. I would think the larger lakes and rivers would still be accessible.

Well, i would assume the cold night and wind laying down probably tightened up most all of the small lakes. I assume the bigger and deeper lakes with decent access are all that'll be left, which is fine.

have three days of possible open, then Sunday night hits single digits and serious ice making weather settles in. Just hope it stays cold enough so that things get safe out there for hard water season. Last year December rebounded a bit too much.

If you are traveling any distance, probably should call ahead to be sure. Rhinelander temps are supposed to drop to the single digits tonight. That could have a dramatic impact on lakes/rivers.

I saw the launch at Greer's was froze this morning on their webcam. That is a current area so when that freezes....typically all of the medium size lakes are locked up tight (unless somebody busts them up before the ice gets too thick). Water temp on the big/deep lakes was still around 43 on Wednesday...should be able to get out on Trout, Tom, PI, Fence, etc this weekend for sure. Good chance they will be open for the following weekend as well.

Greers just locked up over night out to bouys. Was open yesterday afternoon. Clear is 3" out about 60 yards. Anything in quiet bays is locked up. Found 1 lake I want to fish open so that where in heading tomorrow. Probably last hoorah for year. It's sad
