Who makes the best Wisconsin supper club drink the Old Fashioned? Sweet, sour, whiskey, Brandy? What brand? If you order one in Wisconsin, be prepared to answer those two questions or get a blank stare. In fibland they only make a whiskey sour. I am sure that is everywhere else as well. Many of those are not that good. Keep this discussion civil and respectful, I sense this could get ugly!

Mr Todd....... There is a little hole in the wall restaurant....The silver lake inn in West Bend.....we visit this place frequently for retirement parties, as they have specials, all the ribs, shrimp, and fish you can eat....pick 2 of the 3....they make an excellent old fashion....as they make their own old Fashion Mix!!! I usually have them throw in Olives...AND, their Marinated Mushrooms....really good! Whiskey Old Fashion Sour!!! MMM Good! JD

Birminghams up in Sturgeon Bay makes a mean brandy old fashioned. Deadly.
No self respecting bar in Wisconsin should use a mix for an old Old Fashioned!
I make a pretty mean one myself.

Cimaroli's Supper Club outside Portage has great Brandy Old Fashioned. House special is " flat iron steak" which is very, very good.

There is a place called David Alan Alan's smoke house in Mukwonago - they have a smoked old fashioned that is killer. I myself prefer a brandy sweet with the maraschino cherries crushed and an orange slice

Pine Ridge Restaurant on Lake Sissabagoma has a very good Brandy Old Fashioned and IMHO the best fish fry in WI. Get there early if you want to eat within an hour of arrival during the busy season...

The Dorf House in Roxbury, WI makes the best Korbel old fashioned. Can also do whiskey if you choose. They also have a great Friday fish fry and their German smorgasbord is great when they have it. On the other side, DO NOT get an old fashioned at the Minocqua Brewing Company! There is coconut or something in it and was terrible! None of the bartenders knew what was in it or what kind of brandy they use.

Milwaukee Sentinel did a story on supper clubs not too long ago and I was surprised that more and more people ask for whiskey rather than brandy old fashions. I have always preferred whiskey but thought that brandy was much more popular.
The little bar and grill on the lake where I live outside Rhinelander, The Birchwood, makes a nice old fashioned. They had a special, either food or drink, every day in December leading up to Christmas. One Friday the special was $2 Old Fashioned. I was stunned to see the bar tender making it from scratch, muddling a cherry, orange peel, sugar and bitters. I figured at that price they would use a mix. The owner and bar tender both shook their heads and said nope, ain't happening here.

Best brandy old fashioned is made by Betsy at the Ding-a-ling just east of Mercer on hwy 51. Also, Betsy’s father was musky guide Vern Sutherland who famously guided a woman to a 50+ pound fish on the TFF....

Never had an old fashioned, had to look it up as I've never even heard anyone order one here in Northern NY.. whiskey sour would be sort of similar, maybe?

Not that anyone asked, or cares, but I have a love for Moscow Mules. There is a classic place in Lake Placid NY called The Cottage, who make the best Mule I've ever had. We go to Placid a couple times a winter to watch college hockey, always gotta stop to The Cottage.

I am a fan of the Old Fashion from Waterfront Mary's in Sturgeon Bay.

I prefer sweet and muddled. Many places don't "muddle" they just mash stuff with a spoon. Here they really muddle with a mortar and pestle.

Delicious....

This is valuable information, we go to the Ding-a-ling a couple of times a year and they do make a great Brandy old Fashion, now I will remember to as for Betsy.

I have tried to make them myself but for some reason when I muddle the orange, cherry and sugar it get's cloudy and just doesn't taste right. I have tried adding more and less bitters and still struggle. Need some training !!

Blink Bonnie's just west of St Germain. Brandy Sweet.... Amazing.
Try to get a seat at the bar and watch every drink be made by hand. No mixes! No reservations either, so plenty of time to have a few before your table is ready.

And they sell way more brandy old fashion's vs whiskey.

If it’s not muddled, it’s not a true old fashion. I prefer Korbel brandy, sour with olives. Most supper clubs in the state can make you an old fashion but the best I’ve had have been at finer establishments with professional bartenders. Distil and Carnevor (downtown Milwaukee) and Mr. B’s in Brookfield are tough to beat, plus you’ll experience the finest steak you’ve probably ever had!

I'd like to thank Todd and the rest of you for setting me off on my own personal Old Fashion bootcamp this afternoon. Since I couldn't get to the swap meet in Rolling Meadows, I settled for experimenting to create my best Old Fashion. I seem to be getting much better at making these than catching Muskies.
.... They taste better each round anyway.

^^^ This. In addition to being the managing editor of the Sawyer County Record, Paul mixes one heck of a Brandy Old Fashioned.

Be careful to muddle the orange flesh and not the peel/pith. It makes a difference.

Are you meaning the Stage Stop in Wilmot?

They do make a good one for sure and stones throw from the Cheddar Curtain.

And there is the rub. Went to dinner last week with a large group. The bartender made a good old fashioned, muddled from scratch, no mix. I thought my whiskey old fashioned with club soda was great but several people complained about their brandy old fashioned. The problem? She put too much brandy in them. I think those folks would be happy with the sugar, cherry, bitters, orange, seven up and no booze. But then my favorite cocktail is a whiskey Manhattan.
