I'm looking for a little advice about camping on an island on the Canadian side of LOTW. I stay at a cabin in the Northwest Angle for a week and I usually find a pack of fish 20-40 miles from the cabin. I hate leaving at prime time and not a fan of traveling a great distance in the dark.

I'm wondering if it would be legal for me to pack a tent in the boat and find an unoccupied island to sleep on for a night. I feel like it should be legal, but can't find any advice on the internet.

Thanks in advance

Joe

I'm not 100% sure on rules, etc but I would start here: https://www.ontario.ca/page/camping-crown-land

What if you just anchored in a protected bay and slept in the boat?

Thought about that, but worried the skeeters would suck me dry.

I live in Winnipeg and probably camped 20 times on different islands. Don't know if it's allowed but I've never had a issue

Different if you are a resident vs non-resident. The link above should spell most of the rules out for you. If i recall correctly most, if not all of the canadian side of lake of the woods requires a permit for each non-resident that you need to purchase in advance for every day you plan to camp.

40 miles from the Angle would put you in the middle of Sabaskong Bay or up by Kenora.
Why not find a different place to stay that's much closer to your fishing?

Why leave fish to find fish? Angle angling pressure?

100% pressure. Too many boats now. I like getting as far off the grid as possible.

I wouldn't risk it! Fishing pressure is insane at the Angle now, but those islands are full of hungry Wolves and Bears!!!

Lol if your boats big enough setup your tent on your casting deck after you anchor. Or get a one man tent

Nersi, our lakes in the CITIES are all fished out so I venture up North to fish the less pressured areas in my free time. I've fished the NW Angle for 12 years, but the pressure has pushed me to other non-pressured lakes. As for camping on an island, I advise you to at least be armed with bear spray and a 6" + lone knife. Someone almost lost their life to a bear mauling in Colorado last week, this is a real dangerous idea. Make sure you tell others what island you are staying on, so they can come search for you if you are in trouble. I also suggest renting or buying a satellite phone when up North of the Angle, if you have boat trouble you want to get out that night so the Bears and Wolves don't eat you. Sleeping in the boat is your best option. Good luck and be safe!!!

You do know that bears can swim, right basstard? If you've been going there for 12 years, I'm sure you have witnessed that. Just hang up the food 12' off the ground, and 5' from the tree, and he should be OK.

Btard,
Another thing to note, I have seen some pretty aggressive squirrels on the islands up there. Better watch your 6 when eating snacks, if you know what i saying.

I'd set up a small tent on my boat, heck I know there are tents made for boats that hook up to cleats.

They sell bells you can wear to keep the bears away.

The bear mauling in Colorado was a Grizzly. There is a big difference between Grizzlies and Black Bears. Black bears want nothing to do with people. They are interested in your food though so like mentioned hang your food in a tree and make sure you don't have any food in your tent. Wolves don't mess with people either but if you have a dog you should use extra caution as they are territorial and may come for your dog. I've been camping in areas with black bears and wolves all my life. We've had some bears show up at night but they took off when we made some noise. A wolf showed up to the camp once but I think it wanted our dog. As soon as it saw people it bee-lined out of there. I'd be more concerned with the mosquito's and flies up there than the wolves and bears.

I am interested in this thread as well because I'd like to do a camping trip to LOTW next year. Joe, be sure to let us know what you find out in your research.

There was an incident within the last ten days where a black bear attacked a sleeping camp counselor. He was sleeping outside, without a tent and was mauled. The bear was captured and killed by the authorities. Yes, for the most part you are fine in black bear territory if you keep food away from tent, etc. but they will attack and you need to be aware of that. I too have hunted, camped in black bear territory for many years but you cannot assume they are harmless.

Wouldn't be too worried about bears and wolves, or even squirrels. Rare that you run into them, and as far as I know there has never been a problem with any one getting hurt by them on the LOTWs. There's been a camp site or two messed up by bears searching for food at times! For non-residents to camp or anchor on the LOTWs you will need a daily camping permit for each person in the boat. If you are in Whitefish Bay then non-residents can not camp on Crown land, otherwise I think the rest of the lake is O.K. with a camping permit.

I think black bear attacks are on the rise. Be very careful Joe, I don't want to have to read about your experience online. Bears are WILD animals people, they are hungry and will eat anything in their path when hungry. If they are with their cubs you have no hope!!!

Thank you for the helpful posts. Im planing to get a couple of daily camping passes tomorrow. Will post if anything is challenging.

In regards to the wolves and bears, I'll be sure to let my cowgirl clang in the wind overnight to scare nothing away. Thanks for your concern bastard, but I'll take my chances in order to win the big fish trophy!

I've camped a few times on lotw. If you're worried about mosquitoes sleeping in your boat then you should be worried about mosquitoes on shore.

If you fish at dusk near small islands you can hear the whole island buzzing.

I camped for 5 nights about 15 years ago. I swore I would never do it again. The mosquitoes were ridiculous.

I'm not trying to deter you. Just giving my experience.

I've talked to other guys who love camping. They must have a much higher mosquito tolerance than I do.
