I've come down to two reels the revo toro S and the beast. I am not to worried about price because after a little searching the web I am able to find the beast for about the same price as the S. What ever reel I go with is going on a 8' H st croix premier. I'm a Muskie rookie and this is going to be my first "true" Muskie specific setup. I know I will be throwing a lot of buchtails, mostly cowgirls and smaller but I occasionally will throw double 13's. A also throw a good amount of jerkbaits/glide baits. What I'm really looking for is a rod that can do most things fairly well. I do not throw crankbaits, I refuse to do anything but troll with crankbaits (that's just me). With the big blades I'm not worried so much abou the fatigue they cause on me, I'm more worried that the reel can handle it and preform well. What do you guys think would be best.

If you found a beast for the same price as an S, then it's a no-brainer. Get the beast!

Easy. If your not worried about the price then get a beast. And strap it on a Thorne Bros predator custom rod.

can usually find beasts new in box for $270 ish, so if you're like me and season doesnt open for 5 months, take your time and a deal will pop up on ebay or another online seller.

I would LOVE to get a Thorne bros. rod but I need my rods to be two piece because I go up to Michigan to Pike/Muskie fish quite often and my boat only has a 6'6" rod locker.

Beast HS > S > Beast 4.9

So if I was to go with the lower speed beast I would be better off with the S. Why is that? I was looking specifically at the 4.9 beast. Just curious what puts the S over that model. Thanks.

Beast is a better reel in terms of features, but speed is more important IMO.

That is not true at all... just depends what you need it for. If you desire a low gear reel the beast is still better then the S...

What I meant by finding them for "the same price" was that I can find the beast for sale as low as the mrsp for the S I'm sure I could find the S for around $175 and lower.

I respectfully disagree, they're not the same. The 29ipt toro S 60 is a much more multipurpose reel than the 4.9 beast. I bought the 4.9 beast specifically for slow rolling big bucktails on pressured fish, and it works great. It's not great for applications where I need line pickup (rubber, glides, etc). I will be buying a couple toro S60's and putting paddles on for multipurpose sticks

If this is your first muskie stick, I'd go with the toro S60 29ipt. It's an exceptionally smooth reel, has plenty of power for big blades, but doesn't force you to reel as fast as you can for rubber and topwater presentations.

You said you need a good rod? I'd recommend an 8'6-9' stick for optimal figure 8 performance.

my 2 cents

Thank you tolle141, that's exactly the information I was looking for. This is my first Muskie setup so I do want it to be multi purpose. I do think I'm going to stick with the 8' rod though so I can work jerkbaits a little better (I'm a short guy fishing out of a short boat). But I do plan on having a costom made rod to 9'6" MH and make that my buck tail rod. With a rod like that I should be able to sling bucks from here in Chicago to vermilion

Not really looking for a high speed reel right now, if I was I would probably just bit the bullet and get the tranx. Just need a quality reel to start out with that can handle mag dawgs, big blades, but also be able to move small buck tails fairly fast.

If that's what your looking definitely get the beast hs it's 34" per turn. 27 inches per turn is way to slow for bulldawgs or swimbaits and with bucktails can't get any speed with the lower gear. You can easily crank in a 10's with the HS model

Ok here we go. I had doth beasts and I prefer the 60s. I felt the beast 4 gear was way to slow if I wanted to put some giddy up to any lure. The hs beast took to much effort to crank any lure with resistance. The 60s I for to be perfect in all situations. The best all around reel.
29 ipt isn't too slow for rubber lured. I've been thrown dawgs since they hit market 20 years ago. I've used 6500c3, calcutta b, lexa 400, calcutta 400d, saltist, tranx. The speed the 60s has will be just fine. The 6500 and calcutta where 24ipt by the way. If you want your bait to move faster, just crank faster

It's funny that these days a 27 inch per turn reel is considered way too slow to be a multipurpose reel. I used to use 24 inch reels and caught plenty of fish on every type of bait i threw, including bucktails and rubber. Then i got 26 ipt revo toros and thought that was perfect. Just food for thought when thinking about reel speed.

I have a HS Beast and a Toro 60S as well. I like the Beast. It is a littlw smoother and has more cast control options. Other than that both reels are very nice. The 29 ipt of the s is nice, but the 27 ipt slower gear Beast would work for lots of stuff too and not wear you out. Still enough speed for bucktails, just have to crank faster.

Or the HS is nice too, just depends on how you want to use it and your preferences.

You'll like it. If the beast came in that 29-31ipt range i'd recommend that, but it doesn't.

If you're doing a lot of glides/jerks then an 8 footer is a good compromise. As you figure out what presentations you spend most of your time on you can build your dedicated combos from there

Good luck! You've chosen the path of sore muscles, sleepless nights, and financial ruin.

I finally found a nacl 60 in a 6.4.1 on eBay for $200 (I think it was a good deal). That's what I was looking for the whole time. Now, next on the list is either a toro Beast or Tranx!

I think the only difference is actually spool size which creates the IPT difference.. but I'm not sure I'll look at my hs50 gear box compared to that of my hs60.

were you get this the Beast 50hs moves like 31 IPT and the beast 60hs moves 34 IPT so Y not go with the 50HS this should be best of both worlds

I'm somewhat hi-jacking the thread to ask about the toro revo s60. I found them for 180. Am I wrong thinking they would be fine all around entry level reel? I just need to pull the trigger, and so the want to fork out 300 for a beast or tranx or 400d
