Generally, I agree. But some fish are hilariously overstated and warrant being called out, especially if it's a supposed guide.

We generally moderate that pretty well and get complaints no matter which way we go. If the fish is truly questionable, people will question it and one might expect to get a few. it's that thing about heat and the kitchen unless you post the image of the fish on a bump board. Otherwise, its better to post something like, "Here's a good one."

'"I'll never post another one" goes to the heat and the kitchen thing, I guess. Catch a monster and want to post an exact length? Bump board it, take a girth, and release it.
How big is this one?

47? Nice fish!

To the O.P. post/reply. If you're referring to the 55+ Wisconny fish, the pic. just didn't appear to be that large.
I have had a 54" in the boat and she was much nicer than the one shown/posted to be bigger...

Really, a fish ....aw heck, nevermind. Steve's right about putting up pics anyway.

I've taken a 50 before and never even bothered to take a pic. of her... I was alone so that had a lot to do with that.

I agree. We should be more sportsmanlike to each other.

Every Muskie is a nice one! They are beautiful fish! Something can be learned from every single catch. If you get bit from a 3 footer there was a reason. Presentation, conditions, structure, etc.... You can take what you have learned and apply it to later days with similar situations and hopefully the monster is there lurking!

Edit** sworrall....nice fingerling!

OK I'll play....Here's what I look at; How close are you holding the fish to you... elbows bent and fish held close ( more accurate estimate) or held away with arms outstretched. Size of the fishes head compared to your mellon ( if you pay attention our head size varies less than our body size...(except of course you "fatheads" out there)........Next the distance between a fishes anal fins.... a hold like your using demonstrates this.... your hand is tight to the middle fins and there appears to be enough room to get a second hand in next to the anal fin.......from the picture I judge you to be an average sized guy ( not a midget or giant). So given that, a hand size similar to my own......Using this criteria...even though I don't have a clear picture of the extended lenth...I am judging the fish in 48" range...possibly a little longer.

What you describe does not happen on fish that are reported accurately

Exactly! The only people getting called out are the ones exaggerating for a better story or in some cases to sell spots in their boat. Nobody holding a 45" fish will get denigrated for being excited about it, unless they claim that fish is 56" long

Whatever. Wish more people posted pics. I like seeing these fish no matter what. Unless it's a debatable world record size who cares how big someone states. People getting all worried about someone else's fish...is just a waste of time and I never understand it. Each their own and all that.

Hard to judge length when the tail is turned away like that. Knowing the guy who caught it, where it was caught, and the build of a bunch of fish I've caught there? I'd say 47 on the low end and 49 on the high end. Sooo.. Yeah. That's a 4 footer.

Does muskiefirst sell a computer caliper? I hear this is the best way to determine fish size on a computer screen.

No a ridiculous claim is not "fine". But it's going to happen. Simply say nice fish and move on. Or, say nothing! Why get worked up over a picture? Big whoop! Now if someone is doing so to deceive for monetary gain, or something of that nature, then by all means, say something.

Why do we have to berate and belittle each other? Why must there always be an argument? Who cares? If Someone posts a 30 incher and says, "hey look at this 50" did it hurt you? No! So who cares, just move on.

Now if someone posts a picture of let's say a vertical hold, should something be said? Yes, but in an educational manner, not a "hey you stupid (enter expletive) you're doing it wrong. We need to promote education rather than childish hatefulness.

I used a generic caliper, put to my phone then to a ruler and this fish is 2 7/16"

as Brian said, fish that are accurately measured and then posted never get heat... but a guide claims a mid to upper 40 inch fish (at best) is 55"+ ? easy to see it clearly isn't that big... credibility is easily lost in this sport...doing stuff like that...well you get it..

If someone posts on here they are obviously wanting people to see and believe something. I want to believe the truth. Who cares? I do, but really not that much it ruins my day or life, but I believe in being honest and full of "common sense". Doesn't have to be an argument, but if you post something, make it believable. No it doesn't hurt, but it is bothersome. Measuring is not subjective, it is a concrete number, such as a buck having 10 points versus someone saying it has 12. Measure then share the photo, or never mention the length and appreciate the fish. But there is no 30 that is a 50, or even 31.
