Do you guys consider fishermen athletes? I see the facebook fishing and hunting folks label themselves athletes and I couldn't disagree more. What do you guys think?

Too funny. No. Fishing is not an athletic event.

Athlete: a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.

Cast a pounder for 8 hours.

Do you consider farmers athletes? I've never been as physically tired as baling hay for 13 hours. Way way WAY more so than chucking rubber.

No, anglers aren't athletes. Typically, good ones work hard, though.

yah 80% of the guys I see out slinging baits might not be able to run a 1/2 mile... to call the entire group of anglers athletes is comical....are some anglers athletic, yes, but athletes? no....

If you go by the definition...proficient at forms of physical activity, well maybe.
As a group ... nope.
I have to agree with Slamr.

Or ... there are plenty of athletes that fish.

That's just extra fuel storage, Slamr. He's clearly an endurance athlete.

Imagine how far he can chuck a pounder.

Fishermen absolutely not. Some hunters I'd definitely consider athletes...especially mountain bow hunters. Cameron Haynes is definitely an athlete. That guy is beast. Runs ultra marathons, lifts like a madman, and is an ultimate predator in the woods

Yup, Cameron is a beast. Enjoy when he's on Joe Rogan's podcast. Rogan's a bit of a freak athlete, himself, and he sings Cameron's praises to no end.

I say yes and I think they should start urine tests for us. Instead of testing for steroids though they should check to see if we are eating too many sausages.

I'm offended at the suggestion, innuendo, slur and aspersion that I am not an athlete. I feel condemed, dispariged, belittled, and defamed by this. You don't have to be Bruce Jenner to be an athlete, and I'm not even exactly sure what (if any) of the events he can still do in any sort of a "manly" fashion. Look the word up and you'll find that it says, "One who is proficient in sports." Musky fishing is a sport, and there have been a few days when I was proficient at it. Therefore I feel 100% entitled to promote that on any media, tee-shirts, bumper-stickers or web-site. I don't mind accepting the fact that I may not be the most winning angler on the lake, or even a great stick......but I'm certainly not going to sit here and listen to people say I'm not an athlete. I am an athlete, and if you can't see that, you don't see so good! Please leave those of us who have so little to hang their hat on, our puny little dreams of being the hero we always felt was hiding inside.

I would consider fishing more of a pastime or hobby than a sport. Having said that, I still consider Marty an athlete.

There are quite a few parallels between tournament fisherman and athletes like preparation, mental focus, and physical execution. Not to mention the whole competition aspect. Still, I say no. Then again, golfers can be athletes..

I think it depends on a persons definition of "athlete". Yes I think it is different than a football or hockey player. BUT there are fishing teams and it can be very demanding if you are fishing for extended periods of time (all day). Like I said I think it depends on the person and situation you are relating too.

No, not athletes. Can athletes fish? Absolutely. Look at Christian Laettner. But fishing, even chucking pounders all day, does not make you an athlete. Does it make you crazy? Yep. But not an athlete.

Fishermen, golfers, race car drivers, all not athletes. Underwater basket-weavers, now there's an athlete.

Definitely not athletes, but there are many hard core muskie fisherman that I would not want to meet in a dark alley! I actually referred to the "Creature Fisherman" in the late 70's as "Pussey armed Jig Fisherman"!!!! Those were the flannel shirt with no sleeves days!
After seeing their results, I joined the crowd. I caught more fish, not necessarily muskies, than I ever had before. Much more work than picthin' a Suick all day. Dear Lord, I Apologize for what I have said/thought to all the jig fisherman and the Pygmies in New Guinea, Amen!
