Posts: 31 | If you only had one rod and one reel to "do it all" what would it be? Why? Oh and it has to last the rest of your lifetime.

Posts: 8863 | Any 8'6 H Rod, and any quality reel in the neighborhood of 5.4:1. Tough? Yes. But that would give me the most versatility as far as throwing lures of various size and weight, and a retrieve speed that was not too slow to be effective for most presentations, and not too fast to make blades/double 10's too much work to throw. Your slower (low gear ratio) reels are great because it makes a lot less work of reeling. Your faster (higher gear ratio) reels are great because it allows for a lot of line-pick-up at the expense effort.

| TI xxh 9 ft split-grip with a Revo Toro S60. Very good al-purpose rod that won't break the bank, and the reel has a 5.3:1 ratio which is a good compromise between easy-to crank and quick line pick-up with large, heavy-duty gears and a beefy construction, but isn't over-sized like a Tranx. Still brings in 29" per crank. Edited by Chemi 1/20/2016 6:05 PM | |||

Posts: 1283 | My go to, up to Dbl 10s and mag size rubber is a St Croix Big Nasty Split grip paired with a Abu Toro Beast HS with the weighted power handle. Seems to do everything great.

Posts: 785 | The last comment about lasting the rest of your life made me think. The most indestructible reel I've ever used is my Abu 7000cl big game, the black one on a 8'06" St. Croix Premier Heavy. I like my Toro Beast, but it's still new and I have not tried it yet. Kdawg

Posts: 531 | I love my TI 10'6" XXH's with the PG Tranx for almost everything...but if I could only have one rod, I'd go with the first 9' Big Nasty I built spiral wrapped with the Tranx PG. It will handle everything I throw. It's just easier to throw jerkbaits on a 9' rod than the 10'6"...

Posts: 92 | Big nasty and PG tranx for me. Does everything fantastic. Jerk baits are the only thing i use another rod for and thats only because i get annoyed at the longer rod slapping the water from time to time.
