Posts: 284 Location: Eagan, MN | Watched Bassmasters 'Winning Ways' episode last night. They were filming Aaron Martens, arguably the hottest anglers on the Elite tour, having just won his 3rd AOY title. Aaron was talking to his camera man, while filming his win on a western reservoir earlier this year. He caught his winning bag in clear, shallow water. At one point, Aaron was discussing how he camouflages himself. In high vis situations, he said he has noticed that fish spook at the sight of a human face. He said he is careful to cover his face and feels that fish react more positively when he wears a sun buff. If this is true, one could easily see how this would translate to musky fishing with all of our boat side encounters. So, is Aaron talking crazy? Or, could buffs provide more than just sun protection? BrianF.

Posts: 121 Location: Forest Lake, MN & Bemidji, MN | Sales and marketing! But masks are great for sun protection instead of putting sunblock all over your face. The other fishing related sales and marketing one I love now is SPF/UPF long sleeve shirts. If people need sunblock 'in' their shirt they probably should not be in the sun fishing but I suppose this clothing gives them the option. But unless you get sunburnt through the shirts you are wearing what's the point? Besides being a marketing ploy to charge $70 for a microfiber long sleeve. I have yet to get a sunburn through any of my non SPF long sleeve shirts.

Posts: 284 Location: Eagan, MN | I get it about marketing and product promotion by the pros and all that. I also get it that Aaron is a bit goofy, but I still like and respect him. In watching the clip, I got the distinct impression that Aaron was 'in the zone' at the time, focused on the task at hand, and simply articulating the stream of consciousness that was going through his head while he was in the heat of battle during a tournament. He never once mentioned the name of his sponsor, but seemed to focus instead on the keys to the success he was having at the time. He spoke of lots of other things that some would find crazy, besides the idea of face recognition by fish. Whether there is anything to this or not, no one would argue that Aaron is an extremely successful angler. He seems very attuned and observant to what's going on around him and seems to 'stack' a lot of little things in his favor that, together, seem to make a big difference for him. Maybe that's the real take-away here.

I like to think it's from perfect practice, precise boat control, and reading fish. That being said if I thought it did and it gave me more confidence, I would ALWAYS wear it. When you are @ the highest level in any sport, having something that makes you think you have an advantage (even if it's not) is a huge confidence builder, and more Confidence makes you perform better. Posts: 1516 | I few years back there was a guy selling a clothing line at the Muskie Shows that had a blue shirt with whit spots like a sky with clouds. I don't think it caught on though I suppose you could get a blue shirt and tie dye it

Posts: 8782 | I can see a case being made for light colors, but no matter what you wear you still cast a shadow. There is no doubt in my mind that movement scares fish. But the sight of a human face? If it was true we'd all be wearing shirts with pictures of fish on them.

Posts: 1023 | Sounds like BS. He may actually believe it or he may be using stealth advertising. Wearing a sky coloured shirt does make a difference when I am sight fishing for carp with my fly rod. I always were a light blue shirt when musky fishing too. Can't hurt.

Posts: 99 | There is a fine line between a genius and a nut job. Not saying this works, but stranger things have been proven to be true in our world. And as mentioned earlier when you are competing at the highest levels every little advantage helps.

Just think of how big our eyes look with our glasses on. On any given day any given rule can apply, also any given exception to that rule....

And he'd beat most of you schmoos in any physical endurance contest too. He's also a really nice guy. Buy the buff, what the heck. Except for sled, that would just be too weird looking. http://bass.outdoorsfirst.com/articles/09.10.2015/9010/The.Running....

Posts: 504 Location: Ludington, MI | It's proven that bees and hornets hone in on the "triangle" of the human face formed by the eyes and the mouth. Given that no animals on the planet make you scream about the woman who sired you and fornicators more than muskies and wasps, it's probably a theory with some validity.
