Posts: 1283 | Does anyone know when they will hit the stores? Dying to get my hands on one in person. I know you can order from Abu on 9/9 but would rather buy from a storefront. Thanks

Posts: 2024 | achotrod, I know you're an NaCl fan. Steve let me try out the Toro S in the 5 something gear ratio (I believe it was 5:4) at Spring Bay last week. I'd suggest you wait to make up your mind and give that a try as well. It was unsreal how well balanced it was. Granted, it was mounted on a St. Croix elite, but I didn't have to even grip the reel to pull in showgirls and mag 8/9s. An, it cast so well. You fish a lot, so maybe the upgrade to the Toro Beast will help ya, but at the price point the Toro S is at, it'll be the perfect reel for me.

Posts: 323 Location: Elk River, MN | From TB page September 14th "ABU GARCIA REVO TORO BEASTS & THE TORO S.....ARE IN STOCK NOW AT THORNE BROS.! A shipment arrived about 10 minutes ago. We have both speeds in the Beast 60, we have the 4.9:1 in the 61 (left handed), & we have both left & right retrieve in the Toro S. For the time being, these will be sold in store and over the phone at 763-572-3782. They will eventually make their way to our site to be sold online. Quantities are limited, first come first serve."

Posts: 750 Location: Minneapolis, MN | In the 60 size of the Beast you get 4.9:1 with 27 IPT or 6.2:1 with 34 IPT, the 50 size loses 3 IPT at both gear ratios. Compare to the Tranx PG at 4.6:1 with 30 IPT or the HG at 6.6:1 and 43 IPT. Also, the new Toro S gives you 5.3:1 with 26 IPT in the 50 size and 29 IPT in the 60 size, but you don’t get to decide what handle you want to use. So IMO not the Tranx killer people were hoping for, but still should be very nice reels overall.

Kdawg Good points, I typically only look at the performance numbers when comparing reels. 3 IPT probably isn’t make or break, but at the higher gear ratio, the 9 IPT seems like it could be more impactful.

Kdawg 3" IPT with lower gear ratio, bigger gears, and bigger spool is a big difference, especially if you are casting big blades for any length of time. I like what ABU did and will be getting a 4.9 beast for an all around reel. Looks like they have a winner.

Abu has given guys the most options for cranking big baits with 3 gear ratios to choose from to get the ideal effort/speed ratio for the most popular Muskie or Big Bass baits that use this type of reel (D10s or large swim baits/umbrella rgis). I do wish there was a high speed option, but that would be primarily for saltwater.

I would be fun see a reel curve similar to the draw curves you see with archery equipment. I would have to guess there is a way to actually show the work involved with reels.

Posts: 756 | Benr- 3 inches per turn can be a big difference for you when fishing blades, but for me its a reel that weighs six ounces less and fits in my hands better, makes a long day using blades easier. Again, guys will have to make up their own minds. Kdawg

Thanks! Well they did have them and i did buy one. Got the 60 HS beast. It will probably end up on my XH Predator for rubber but i will try it for blades also to determine the best fit. I'll be up north for a week giving it a work out and will try to report back.

Posts: 859 Location: MN | Was at Thorne bros yesterday they had all the reels Beast and S. I checked out the S was very smooth and hand fit was much better then the Nacl but I passed. Didn't think it balanced on my rods as well as the 400d. I will be interested trying one or trying the beast to see how they do on the water.

But this spreadsheet shows how some popular reels compare when it comes to retrieving a bait at a specified speed. Posts: 251 | That is pretty cool. Good work. Do the size of the gears themselves (diameter) make a difference in the work required? I don't think I saw anywhere where that would be taken into account. I think this chart is a great tool and I will try to go home and measure the handle length on the reels that I have to help fill it out.
