Location: Madison, WI | When I first started buying musky lures a couple years ago I didn't know how to properly store them so I have a few grungy lures (rubbers touching cranks etc...). I've read a couple posts about people putting lures in the dishwasher to clean them and I was wondering if many of you have tried it successfully?
Sounds pretty dangerous to me with heat sensitivity and all... |

Location: oswego, il | Elite muskies eat with their right pectoral fin extended in an upward direction. Your baits not only need to be clean but artsy as well.
You will never catch a 1%er with a dirty unmanicured bait.

| I guess it would save you the trouble of washing them in the lake one at a time like the rest of us...
If you're going to try the dishwasher trick, I will offer a few suggestions:
1. Make sure your wife is not home.
2. Muskies prefer the taste of Cascade over any other soap.
3. Jet Dri is a must. You don't want water spots when your lures are dry.
4. Make sure you wash like colors together - if you have a new red lure, it just may turn all your whites pink.
5. I'd steer clear of the heated dry option if you are washing any rubber baits. You wife may be gone now, but she will come home eventually, and I don't think melted rubber all over the inside of the dishwasher is a mess you can hide for very long.
6. A light coat of automotive wax is a nice touch after a good wash. It repels water nicely and may even make your lures more buoyant.

| I love my baits that have color bleeding. Those are custom colors no one else has. I had a white crankbait that is now a very odd chartreuse/pink color in a pattern that I call "toddler with paintbrush" because the pattern isn't really a pattern, just a bunch of weird bleeds of varying brightness. That crank gets absolutely crushed these days. Never got bit once when it was all white. I wouldn't dream of washing it!!! |

Location: Madison, WI | I mean i'm all for a good roast but golly gee willikers guys. In my post I made it clear that I was questioning if it would work and the only reason I was interested was due to others saying they've done it successfully. Fishing a bait does not make the rubber junk left on a crank, after storing them touching each other, come off.
As a newbie I'd rather ask an honest question - which turns out to be stupid - than ruin my baits. I may have not specified what kind of baits I was thinking of trying it with but I was not planning on throwing anything rubber or fragile in there and I would not use soap. I came here for guidance and advice but I realize some people would prefer to make jokes they can chuckle at behind their computer screen rather than give actual direction. I will be borrowing my roommates toothbrush when i get home and trying to clean the rubber crap off that way. good day

Location: oswego, il | You could throw the baits with your roommates tooth brush and a Brillo pad in a washing machine. Buy some tide on the black market. This might work. Don't put it on delicates you need that #*#* moving. When your done don't forget to put your room mates tooth brush back where you got it. DO NOT use the dryer. You will ruin your Dadsons and consequently your entire life. Not found a bait that would last through a high heat dryer cycle. Just an fyi.

Location: MN | A few things you can do a quick wash in Dawn soap with a washcloth. It cleans up a lot. I like sent free. Then some times I will lightly use GOJO with a small piece of cloth to lightly buff out any rust stains goop, paint, lake stain ect. If that doesn't work and you have paint transfer goof off or whatever its called can work but you want to wipe it and test a spot first. I always quick rinse to it doesn't stay on the bait in eat into stuff. I buy on the trade and sell and some baits that look roached out look a amazing with a little cleaning and some new split rings and hooks. But I'm a cheap and don't have a ton of cash to splash around so I don't mind everyone seconds. That being said some things really cannot be cleaned. |

another way i hear some folks do it is by throwing them in swimming pools ... i hear sometimes it even draws a crowd |

| In all honesty, I'd recommend 2 things:
1. If you are going to stick with musky fishing, (and run with this crowd) you might want to develop a little thicker skin. At the end of the day, just about everyone here would be glad to help you learn the game. The crap we dish out around here is nothing compared to the crap you'll get from these stupid fish.
2. I'd try goo-gone or even acetone on a rag to get rid of the melted paint. You won't ruin your lures. Time and fish will do that for you, and those will become your favorites. |
