Location: The desert | I'm devoting this season to blades (mostly 10s) and topwater. I've got topwater reels covered but want the easiest reeling possible for double 10s (because I'm lazy).
So winch or nacl? Which gear ratios? 50 or 60?
Don't suggest tranx (I'm cheap).

I got a Revo Toro NACL 60 in the 5.4 ratio last year and love it. I would not want the winch. I tried the power handle on its longest setting, and it was TOO effortless. I actually didn't like it - it was almost hard to tell if the blades were turning. I put the power handle on the shorter of the two settings and really like the combo. Cranks easy, but can pick up the speed some without killing myself too.
The only reason I see buying a winch is if somebody is trying to force themselves to slow down at night or something, or cranking in double 20s maybe. |

revo toro winch, 4.6 gearing. allot of reeling and not much happening, even with a power handle. ( i had two and sent them both in to get re-geared to 5.4)
nacl, 5.4 gearing with the power handle is the only way to fly for 10's on a working mans budget!!!!! |

| What it comes down to is the reel that is easiest is also the slowest at retrieving at a giving crank speed. If your slow rolling 10s get the reel that has the lowest inches per turn retrieve. No short cuts, it's how many calories are you willing to burn for speed. |

Location: Madison, WI | the winch is easier for sure, but the 5.4 NACL is not too tough. Its worth the extra resistance just to have the extra speed. Get the Nacl 60 in the 5.4 and you'll love it. |

Location: WI | I have both. Nacl is the way to go. I am thinking of having my winch gears changed. Makes blades easy to pul. But you just can't take up line fast enough if a fish comes at you. Lost a big on because of this last year. |

| Like I said in the pm I use the 60 5.4. I find it to be the happiest medium of the toro. Much faster then a winch and much more powerful then the 6.4 |

| if you want to turn blades on a budget in my opinion you need to look at a saltist. the new black one with level wind in an awesome blade and rubber reel and is actually cheaper than the others you are looking at |

Location: musky waters , WI | Are you set on a getting a revo? I have 2 of them a nacl 5.4 and toro 5.4 both great reels. Never tried either for 10's.Had a winch and used it one outing and sold it. Was to slow for me when reeling 10's but it felt like pulling a mepps marabou in while reeling in 10's. I also had a saltist and it was ok but went back to the 400 B. I would look at getting a shimano callcuta B 400 w/ power handle should be able to get reel and handle for around $250 ish. This is what I used for two seasons until I purchased a tranx . The 400 B w/ power handle makes reeling 10's in pretty easy and your still able to burn them without to much effort as compared to the winch. |

I did mine myself. Make sure that the spool, drive gear (gear on the spool shaft), and yoke are the same numbers on the schematic of your reel as the reel schematic of the one you want to get (5:4 or 6:4 geared reel) There are about 3 different series where they have change little things inside the reel. First find your reel schematic, look on the bottom on the reel seat and find the part numbers of the parts of those items in the worksheet below and then find the reel with the gears you want with those same numbers and order them. Also Abu Garcia may also be able to help you find the right parts, but I would make sure I knew what I needed. Here is my worksheet I did for my 19.00 Winch (in blue) to a 18 series Revo Toro High Speed. Of the 3 models of HS, the one in tan was the proper parts to use for the main and pinion high speed gears in my Winch.

Pointer... the Nacl and winch will bring in double 10s with ease...they are not going to burn them... not even close... the saltist for the money is a decent reel. still the tranx is the cats azzzz imho and a step up from the saltist, you can get a saltist for 170 bux on ebay new |

1. reel engages in the first rotation and not immediately
2. lever arm disengage

Location: Contrarian Island | funny and true story. fished with a "big name" GB guide once.. he told us he was really "burning" his 10s in with his Winch...(as I giggled to myself) then he saw how fast ours were coming in w a saltist and tranx and you could see the lightbulb go off in his head when he realized how much faster ours were coming in.... bet he has one of those 2 reels now... lol. |

Location: Madison | If you can live without a level wind check out the Avet two speed reels. They are small and easy to palm. Can slow roll in low or burn them in high. I am a lefty so I didn't have may options. |

I was curious about the cost of switching a 50 nacl hs to 5.4. I looked up parts as described and #33 (1160665) and #44 (1204943) are listed for both reels. |

For this I would just swap reels with someone that has a nacl 5:4 50 for a nacl 50hs and save yourself some money because it will be a whole lot cheaper to ship a reel than buying those gears.
