Is there any way to save these, or are they trash once all chewed up?

Take a windproof lighter(butane) and melt the area around the cut and pinch it back together. A regular lighter will work, but the windproof butane works best for me. Another thing to do is take a Dawg that is beyond repair and use the tail and other plastic for filler pieces. Cut off chunks and melt them into cuts on your Dawgs that can still be repaired. Most Dawgs can be brought back to life with a little creativity...I was out in the boat a couple of weeks ago with a buddy who works some serious magic with his old, torn up plastics.

My buddy's cousin is a Nurse Practioner, and gets ahold of the things they use to burn stitches out with, and to cotorize things. They look like a battery operated soldering iron. These are the best things out there for surgery on Dawgs. If you go to Bass Pro or Cabela's, I believe they sell plastic welders that would work as nice.

If the you are missing part of the tail, I have bought replacement tails for squirrley burts and then cut them
to fit the end of the bulldawg. If you do not have a windproof lighter, I have taken an old knife and heated it
up from the flame on the stove and then melted the pieces on both ends, stuck it together and added super
glue.

Good luck!

Those Cotorizers work sweet. If you know anyone in the nursing, veterniary, or optometry field ask them what they do with their used cotorizers as they can only be used once (on humans anyway?), and fit into teeth holes perfectly. From what I heard the commercial ones do not work as well as the Rx ones.

The best thing I have ever used and don't know if there is anything better....

A wood burner, like the ones you can use to write with on wood.

They get super hot, and are long enough to melt the inside which you need to do, melting the outside will not hold.

Use a wood burning tool. They work great.

If you really want to do serious 'dawg repair:

you get my point.....seriously, get one of these babies, fix a dawg or two, and you'll be laughing at your friends trying to use a regular lighter on the boat, trying to fix their dawgs. however, they dont do well being tossed around in your tackle bag, and they will scare your partners when you start using them to light smokes on the boat.
AND, you can fix as many dawgs as fuel you want to buy, can save you on any big plastic over time.

Slamr's idea is a good one, and have used it many times, but for a cleaner fix job....

I would suggest this:
