I just ordered a 500 yd spool of Power Pro 50lb line which has the diameter of 12lb test. I have 4 6500C3's that I'm going to spool with the new line. Question is : Due to the small diameter of the power pro, do I need to put backing on b4 I put the power pro on? If so, could I use Cortlands Musky Master 45lb??

Thanx for your help!

If you don't use some backing you will likely go for a big hook set and feel your line just spin on the spool. I use 30lb mono for a backing. With 100lb power pro usually I use about 90yrds of 30lb mono.

My suggestion....

Use mono backing that is roughly the diameter of the superline. Fill about 15% of the spool with the mono and the rest with superline. Tie the two together using, I think this is the name: a double uni knot. You'll probably never, ever find a fish has pulled line out all the way to the mono. After one season, transfer the superline from one reel to another, attaching the "used" portion of last season's superline to the mono. Moving the line to a second spool will bring the fresh, unused line to the top of the spool for your new season.

and that's all I have to say about that

I don't use Power Pro but I have completely spooled my reels with superline. I use a piece of 3M-waterproof black electical tape on the first wrap of the superline.

I have never had a slipping problem.

Either method mentioned here will work.

I'm not so much concerned with slippage as I am with the amount of line that fits on the real. If I put straight Power Pro on I'll be able to get about 200 yards on a spool. Then I'll need 800 yds of Power Pro for four reels.

Unless you are a very good "caster", I suspect you will experience quite a few bad backlashes with that 50# line, and you'll be cutting off a lot of tangled line. Why? The smaller the diameter of the line, the more prone it is to a backlash and the worse the backlash. Moreover, the more line you cut from the spool, the smaller the overall diameter of the spool becomes and the faster it spins when you cast. The faster the spin, the worse the backlash. At least this was my experience with 35#, 60# and 80# Tuffline and PowerPro. Now all I use is the 80# PowerPro and my days of bad backlashes, cutting away tangled line, and having to completely respool the reels to keep them full, are over. The 35# stuff was a nightmare for me.

Now you might be more skilled than me, I'm sort of a newbie, and so maybe none of this applies.

I use electrical tape on the spool instead of backing with another type of line. The line will bury itself into the tape and won't slip. I've been using this method for years with no problems at all. You can cut down on the amount of line needed to fill the spool by using more tape.

As a backing I buy the cheapest, largest diameter line I can find. It is usually some really thick 50# line. I then fill a little over a third of reels capacity with this cheap stuff and then fill her up with 80# power pro. You don't need to spend much money on the backing as it will never see the light of day anyway.

I would echo Ranger's comments about using heavier line then you are considering. I used 80# Tuf for years and have recently converted to Power Pro and love it because it is so much drier. I started with 80# but feared it would snap with big Dawgs so I moved up to 100# and found it is much less prone to backlashes.
