Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Pigment of the Flash!

Its my understanding that when a bait flashes it actually is throwing off 2 colors and not one.Can we see this with the human eye or is it too quick?
Example...The pigment of the flash throws one color by reflection and a complementry color by transmission, thus providing a high degree of color verging iridescence.

Muskie E,
The color by flash is easily seen by the human eye but any other color "verging irredescent" has to be at a specific angle to see it and even at that you have to be looking for it. That's for the human eye. I believe the fish's eye is able to pick it up faster. Other than this I would have to disclose some of my "classified info" which would not be the thing for me to do. I believe Jlong and a couple of the other researchers could help you out on this subject as they are well knowledged in that area.

An interesting topic indeed, I also think its one that is overlooked frequently. Here is my take on the deal. Like many of us that fish the same bodies of water, you begin to notice a color pattern that will work; all time, some of the time, or only on occasion. But how many of us have tried throwing a bait with what we consider to be the same color, or close enough lets say and absolutely nothing happens. Then the question becomes; What is it about that certain colored bait that seems to stimulate the muskies into either striking or following? I dont have the answers, but what I have decided to do is begin to paint my own baits with combinations of different color tints to see if I can get some response from them.

What I did discover last year, was after I began throwing some baits with the "hologram" paint effect on them, they seemed to trigger many more strikes and follows than any of the traditional baits that I was throwing. Ok, one more question though. Is it the paint effect? Or have the fish become conditioned to traditional baits and all of a sudden here comes a color flash, tint, etc. that they havent seen before?

Xlund, I'd guess the added flash provided by the holoform tape increased the "calling distance" of your lure for the lake conditions you were fishing. Thus, you had more follows... which probably lead to more strikes. Just a thought.

Actually Mr E, it's quite simple; compare it to todays culture. When I was younger, and even stupider than now, the women that had the most flash got me attention, regardless of color! Throw in w/ that jerking, wiggling and porpoising, and you have chasable stuff...all things to consider when inventing a new product. The closest thing to Holoform that I can remember would be disco clothing, and the flash of sequins, satin and silk under a glitter ball/strobe light combo would be enough to drive a weak peep to his knees! Fortunately I had enough Woodstock ingrained in me to avoid being sucked into that lifestyle![:sun:]
