Posts: 1516 | You can sleep a little easier, Bassmasters: Researchers now say that fish cannot feel pain, even when they've been snagged by a hook. The study authors have surmised that when a fish thrashes after being hooked, it's an unconscious reaction, not a response to pain. Although fish have sensory receptors that, in humans, indicate feeling pain, our finned friends don't have the brainpower to "experience [pain] in any meaningful way." In this study, trout that were hooked and released quickly went back to feeding (or looking for food) which would not have been the expected response if they were in pain. Animal rights groups, however, say this doesn't change their opinion that fish would say "ouch!" if they could. [Source]

Posts: 8781 | They might not feel pain, but live bait sure knows when it's about to get eaten! Maybe we should make little blindfolds for our suckers in the fall. Two muskies are sitting on the edge of a bar when they see a few suckers hanging vertically off the side of a boat. The smaller musky says to the bigger one "hey, look over there. Suckers! Let's go eat them!!" The larger muskie says "no, not so fast. Here's what I want you to do. Swim over there and circle the boat a few times and then come back...." So the smaller muskies does as he was told, circles the boat a few times and comes back. "Like that?" he says? "Just like that." Says the larger muskie. "NOW let's go eat them!" The smaller muskie is now really confused... "I don't understand... If we're just going to eat them anyway, why bother circling the boat?" "They taste a lot better if you get the sh*t out of them first!"
