I just spent the last few months recarpeting a Stratos 217 that I bought in the offseason. Outboard seems to be running pretty good, but I have only had it out a time or two.

Just looking for opinions on whether I should remove the VRO and mix the gas and oil on my own. I kind of feel like I'm rolling the dice if I leave it. What do you think? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had a '96 Faststrike 115 up until last month. That VRO pump was driving me nuts. Lots of problems. Ended up repowering. But if it's not giving you grief yet, why remove it? Maybe wait and see what happens. But if you do, I would be curious to hear how the VRO removal would go. If you end up doing it keep us posted on how it goes.

An old fourwheeler trick was to put premixed gas into to oil injector tank, and run premix. That way you dont have to remove anything, and if the oil pump failed it doesnt matter your running premix. Or if the pump never failed it still didnt matter because it had premix in it.

Again thats an old fourwheeler trick, an outboard may be different

anzomcik I like that idea why didn't you tell me before I blew up two of them. Don't know how difficult removal is but I would.

Hiya,

The VRO problems that OMC had with the system were in the late 80's. Problem was solved in fairly short order. your 96 should be just fine.

I would say if it isn't broken, don't fix it. It will use less oil than if you mixed 50:1. If you are unsure whether or not it is working to begin with, you can do as was stated and use a premix 50:1 in the main tank and run the motor with that for a while to see if the level of oil drops in the VRO tank. If it does, your VRO is working and you no longer need to run premix. If the oil level does not drop, then you can go through the process of removing the VRO tank. It is basically the same method used for when a remote tank is first hooked up to the system and used during break-in.

Either remove it or keep a close eye on your oil level to make sure it is using oil. I would not say that they have this problem fixed, we see them as new as 5-6 years old fail every year. Now they just keep raising the prices on new pumps, if you can get them, they tend to be on backorder allot.

Wouldn't you know it pretty quick if it wasn't using oil...as in engine failure?

That motor has a oil atomizer on it and mixing gas in tank will not give you your proper oil to gas ratio, that's what evinrudes customer service said. Had a 91 60HP evinrude with the oil pump problem , after researching problem found that even changing pump is still not a safe bet. They still did not fix problem in pump. If it is still working I wouldn't change it, you got a good one.

My buddy has a 96 115 faststrike that has been absolutely bullet proof. He isn't known for taken great care of his stuff but I have been in that boat since it was brand new and it runs like a top. If you aren't having problems with your engine I wouldn't lose any sleep over it... Run it.
