Is there a company that would make molds from prototype wood baits. I'm looking to make my wood gliders out of plastic instead of wood and need a mold made. I have three shapes so would need three molds. Thanks

Lure-craft makes molds. Ask them for help.  If it has a flat side, you can make your own mold. I've made all my molds out of two part gell coat.

There are lots of businesses (well there used to be) that make molds and you should be able to find someone in your area.  Search for injection molders and look for a shop that can handle it all from design to moldmaking to molding.  There are few ways to get the bait molded.  One way is to mold two halves at a time and then in a secondary operation put all your hardware in and either bond or sonic weld the two halves together.  That’s how baits like Jakes or Depthraiders are made.  Another way is to mold a solid body with blowing agents and insert mold your hardware like hook hangers, weights, lips etc…  That’s how the Triple D, hellhound, and MDR Choppers are made.  You’ll pay a little more in piece part cost that way because of a longer cycle time and a required operator, but you don’t have the secondary operations and the chance of a leaky bait.  The last way is to just mold the solid blank and then put in your screw eyes and hardware in a secondary operation like you would in wood bait.  I don’t prefer that option, but it is the least expensive of them all.  I don’t prefer it because, and especially if you are looking for a lighter density bait, is that in the molding process the plastic will form a hard outer skin area with a lighter density foam core.  The integrity of the screw eyes holding in this foam is questionable.  When you insert mold the hardware you get that hard skin to form over all the hardware making for a very strong bait.  When I was a partner at ERC I pull tested the hellhound’s hardware to over 300 pounds without failure.  You may be able to find someone to it for around that 3 grand mark, but you may also receive quotes for 3 or 4 times that amount, and that’s just for the first mold.  If you specify up front that you want additional baits down the road they can design a mold to allow for interchangeable cavity and core block and that will save you in the long term.  Ask lots of questions about all the costs – sampling and tool modifications can cost you.  If you need a project manager for this I’m for sale.  I can do all the design and engineering and know many reputable molders and moldmakers

This is my business area. AL metal molds run less but will only make XX number of parts well and then the mold is shot. Regular injection molds are made from tool grade steel and are engineered to make 1,000's of identical parts. (not cheap depending on size) Commonly off shore they use a mold and then make "inserts" to mold the baits. Outcome so-so but once the project is slow the inserts get used on other parts too.Quality seems to always be an issue. Honestly unless you have a genuine business to support the manufacturing the silicone mold will allow you to start, evaluate re-design etc...then do the proto-type AL mold for a few thousand. After that you can decide if you want to get into real production. You would be surprised how many big names use proto-type molds first and then move to a production mold after they know they have a winner. Makes good CENTS

Thank you. This is very good information. Does anyone specialize in making proto-type molds. I agree that a protype should be tested before building expensive molds.
