Hardware stores sometimes have thick cardboard tubes.
Also sewing shops (my om sews, not me :P) have their fabric rolled up on cardboard tubes.

Never use CARDBOARD Tubes, go to Menards or Home Depot Plumbing Dept. and get a sec of hard PVC Tube and use that.

Schedule 40 PVC pipe with the appropriate end caps. The guys in shipping departments love to play javelin with long tubes. Pack it tight so the tip doesn't snap off when they throw it!

Call any tackle shops near you, sometimes they have the tubes their rods came in laying around.. I've sold a few rods on the buy/sell board here, and never had to pay for a tube.. One of the shops near me always had an extra few laying there..

Cardboard is fine if its thick enough.. Most rods come to the retailers in cardboard tubes to begin with..

Exactly, the stuff that the fabric is rolled up on is REALLY strong

i go to carpet stores and get the thick cardboard tubes..plenty strong enough. all sizes of the tubes are also great for shipping lures..just cut to fit..
