I am very close to buying this model boat and was looking for opinions and advice on both the hull and the outboard.

The boat is going to need some TLC, since the current owner spilled a can of paint in the interior and has since torn out all of the carpet.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Andy

Not overly familar with the boat, a Johnson engine certainly wouldn't be the first one I would look for but it could be ok if serviced properly

Whatever price you are paying make sure you are getting a very good deal considering the condition...
There's a Ranger 681 listed on this site that loooks to be in great condition and a similar model for under 10k, if the boat you are looking at is anywhere near close to that in price I would get this one instead in a heartbeat,,,

Thanks Brian,

This boat isn't by first choice, but the price is right. Not even close to 10,000.

I ran that same motor in a 95 or 96 on a Ranger and liked the motor. The only thing i had go bad on it was a main fuse that burnt out on me once or twice. Very easy fix and just something dumb. After the second replacement I didn't have a problem with it for the next year. After that the whole thing got totaled in a accident so i could see how long the motor would go. it was a good motor to me. Good luck with your purchase.

I bought a 681 this fall with this motor on it. So far so good... Seems to be an okay motor. That said, I bought the 681 planning to keep it a long, long time. The Johnson, though, will go when the time is right.

I ran a 217 for several years with an Evinrude 115hp and thought it was a great boat for lakes like Lac Vieux Desert on up to LOTW. I traded for a Tuffy Esox Deep V and saw little difference. I now have a ranger 620 and do not see much difference in fish ability other than size. The 217 was a great hull and handled up to a 150 hp motor. I do not think you would want to go with a four stroke but any two stroke from 115 hp to 150 hp will work. The 115 Johnson burns gas but was a strong motor.

Andy, in the spring of 1998, I bought a 1997 171 Hydra-Sport boat with a 115 Johnson Faststrike 0n it. The boat your looking at should be allmost the same as my 171 as it was built by the same company that built mine. The 171 is 17'7's in lenght and has a 84" beam with a max. HP. of 150. the boat was built for Walleye fishing on big water. The walleye Fishermen never took to the boat, but the muskie fishermen did and in the 1990's this was the boat every muskie fisher had to have. I still have the boat today and fish with it year round here on Cave Run lake. I have had the boat all over Lake of the wood's, Lake Vermilion , had a trailer at Indian trail on the chip. in Wisc. and guided muskies full time for Tony Grant here on Cave Run Lake. Some day's I thought I needed a biger boat but it allways got us home safe. I now have a 2004 Suzuki 4 stk on it as I blow the head on the Johnson jumping waves here on the cave. The boat could have a 150 on it. but the140 Suzy does a good job and is great on saving gas and oil. if I ever get a nother boat it will be a Ranger 19ft. to 21Ft. but first I have to win a loto for that. Marv.

I'm not real familiar with stratos's walleye boats but they male a gear bass boat. I have a 2000 Javelin Venom 17 (javelin was to stratos what Chevy is to Buick). It has a 115 Johnson (carb'd) and it is a great engine. The only bad thing is that fuel pumps are very expensive and I did have to replace one.I removed the oil injection at the same time to be safe (it is a 12 year old engine). The first start can tough in cold weather but seafoam fixes that.
