| I have a Calcutta 700TE that I can't seem to get the brake tight enough on. I'm mostly throwing DCG's with it. Even when I thumb the spool, big wicked loops of line come peeling away from the spool and backlashes are frequent. I've tried adjusting the centrifugal breaks as well as the friction brake and I can't seem to find a combination that works. I'm thinking maybe there is some grease or oil where it shouldn't be? Any ideas? |

| hmmm, hadn't thought of that, but wouldn't a few days of pulling dcg's tighten things up? |

| Here is something I do with new line that is worth a try:
- Take off the leader and lure
- Behind a moving boat, let out all of the line
- Make sure all of the line gets wet
- Reel the line back in
- Pinch the line VERY tight with your fingers while reeling in
This seems to really pack the line on the spool tight. Good luck!

| Thanks for all the replies. It has backing and the line was put on at thorne bros... I've been muskie fishing almost 20 years, so not to sound curt but I'm pretty sure I'd recognize if the line was slipping around the arbor of the spool. The issue doesn't go that deep, it's just something w/ the very top one or two surface layers/wraps. Really it just seems that I can't get the brake tight enough. I get overruns unless I crank down the brake tight and thumb the spool to the point where I get very little casting distance. |

Location: In the slop! | It could be water in the spool bearings. I've had this happen. Clean the bearings out good with lighter-fluid or something similar. The best oil I have found is TG's Rocket Fuel Red Label, (for muskie size reels). It is amazing what a fresh shot of oil on the bearings can do! |

Location: north central wisconsin | With some of these really tall reels it is sometimes helpful to take just a few yards of line off the reel, so it isn't completely full. You don't want to take alot off, as to detract from the efficiencies of the 700 size, but just a bit less than full can often cure those issues.
