I'd like to think I'm learning from past mistakes and today I finally had success with a figure 8 strike and a nice fish too.

Had a 47" following close behind a swimbait in sparse weeds ...... (clear lake so I could see him all the way)..... then everything fell into place just right, rod tip was already in place to start an 8 and he ate it on the first increase in speed. This time I free spooled and let him run a bit, slammed the hooks home and had a great fight that included a few deep runs. The free spooling and a well set drag paid off as I netted my first figure 8 caught Muskie.

I got a good measurement but decided not to stress this guy out for a cell phone pic (digital is busted) and released him quickly as he was full of spunk.

Hard explaining the thrill of a fish that size hitting so close to the boat, incredible !

Figure 8 fish definitely rock no matter what size. My pb (48") also came on a figure 8 on a very clear lake. Congrats. Hearing about figure 8 fish is one of the best parts of muskie fishing. I hope you get many more on the 8.

Great job on the free spool. Its a mistake many forget. Short stiff line = lost musky

Indeed, learned the hard way last year. Also, this time, I had the patience to wait for him to turn so I could set the hooks into him instead of pulling them out of his mouth. Pretty satisfiying fishing experience when a plan works.
