Posts: 96 | Don't ask me why but whenever I travel I seem to head either West or North?? I decided to step out of my box and head East to fish S. Wisconsin in mid-May. Looking at a map (and thinking ski's would only be open below the hwy 10 line), both Pentenwell and Castle Rock caught my eye. Those are obviously large lakes for 2 days, but I didn't know where else to go with motor restrictions, etc. Are those lakes viable options for early season muskies, or is there something that may be easier for a WI newbie? Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not post.

What are you looking for? If you are simply looking to get some lures wet and have some action it is hard to beat Wingra. About as easy a lake to fish as you will ever find with plenty of fish to keep you occupied. Waubesa is another choice for bigger water and shots at maybe bigger fish on avg. Petenwell and Castle Rock are flowages of the WI River and not exactly 'easy' to fish...if you went there it would be worth hiring a guide for 1/2 day possibly. Todd Forcier would be a good choice. If you head to Madison drop me a PM (MSKY HNR) and I can give you some pointers...good luck

Posts: 96 | I'm only going to get out a handful of times this Summer (i.e. baby due) so I'd lean towards action vs. the chance at a hog. I appreciate the suggestions. I'll look into them.

You have a better shot on the Pete for a ski, IMO, fish some of the MANY backwaters, not easy by any means. Also Mason Lake in that area, has some fish, its weedy, but early in the year is not a bad bet. Caught some fish early there last years, short lining spinner baits.

Better shot on the Pete than Castle Rock for sure...but no where near a better shot on the Pete vs. Wingra...Wingra is like shooting fish in a barrel at times... I think EA can even catch them there! ; ) jk ea.

Posts: 96 | Good to know. If we go that route I may consider bringing the 14' Lund instead of the Tundra. So many choices...Looks like I may need to take a few more days and hit them all! ![]()

pete can be tough when its blow'n, its fairly easy to fish imo.(besides the dead heads)dont bring the14' unless its only blow'n 3-5 even then make sure you keep and eye on the wind. it seems like the wind always blows the length of the lake and that makes for a nasty ride in any boat. fish the river, and mouth of the river. and the bay by barnumbay can be good. having some sort of lake map helps, unless you got mapping on your plotter. if your gonna be in mad. hit up monona, and waubesa. ive had great luck in the yaharah river between the two, under the bridges and upper muds weed lines, the rr tressle is a good spot to start. mad. has some tankers. the uw mad. crewing club has an area near john nolin prk.way and that whole area is good. there is also a hotwater discharge near the mistake on the lake that gets weedy but for the opener is good. purple is a great color for the mad chain, squaw bay is another killer spot, its muddy and shallow near shore but keep 40 yds off the bank and your golden. my .02
