Posts: 791 Location: Delavan, WI | A friend of mine is makin a few bump boards for a select few friends, not for sale-out of wood similar to the Dunwrights and other plastic ones that we have seen on this site- just wondering how to go about getting the #'s put on there- is there stickers/ decals that could be put on there that are available without having them custom made ?

Posts: 2019 | If I was going to make a wood bumpboard - I would measure it out and use a woodburning pen -but I like my Dunwright Edited by IAJustin 3/3/2009 10:21 PM

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | I used to make square measuring stick a lot like the muskie measure that is out there out of pine. I used number punches and had my brother make me a stamp to make lines at every inch. Then when I got done I painted it black, then wiped it off and the indented numbers and lines would be dark and readable. Then sealed it all with polyurethane.

Posts: 4266 | My dad routered a slot for a 48" "yard stick" and epoxied it into a 1x6. Anything over 48, you stick a knife in the board and measure the distance and add it on, or you could make permanent marks. The best part of my measure board is what's on the back. Columns for Lake, date, lure, angler, length. A real heirloom.

I've made a bunch of wood measuring boards. I found a metal tape measure with an adhesive back at the local hardware store for around $7.00. I then used a bunch of coats of varnish over the top. I did this 4 or 5 yearsago if I remember correctly. I still use mine to this day. I thought it was a pretty fun project, and you end up with probably the most accurate measuring method there is. Good luck.

I recently made a wooden bump board of my own after being inspired by Brandyn Shepard's nice boards. I found a 60" sticky back measuring strip at Fleet Farm made by "Fishing Hot Spots." Which is the same maker of some lake maps. Worked well and IMO my board looks great!

The best part is that I was able to build one at a fraction of the price. Wood - $16 ; Stainless Hinges - $7 ; 60" Adhesive Ruler - $5. Total cost $28. I even had some Musky Innovations and Rollies stickers to spice up the appearance a bit. Although I am very happy how my board turned out, I believe $50-60 is a fair price for manufactured boards. It's not that it was hard to make at all but it was time consuming with sealing the wood, primer, paint, hinges and everything else but the main thing is I had a great time building it and this way is much more rewarding.

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | I used a piece of Oak Trim, used a black sharpie pen to put the lines&numbers on, and then gave it a good coat of varnish. Been working great for many years now. A friend of mine routered his board so his metal ruler would lay flush. Only change I'd make is to put the L-brackets on the "bump" underneath to avoid contact with the fish. Same goes for hinges if you use them. I like the novelty of a homemade board..... Good Luck. Posts: 717 Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I have a friend in the graphics business. He made up some water-resistant, laminated graphics for me complete with our Muskies Inc. chapter logo on it. Costs me $25. Not bad for being custom. I made my board out of plastic-sandwiched aluminum. Tough as nails. NOW he tells me it won't cost any extra to do the color bars, or do any other graphic on there instead of our logo. Well, for the next one, I'll get a little fancier. Oh, and some friends of mine made their own out of wood, and used this same graphic on theirs too.
