I bought a small lot of lures off e-bay a while back and in the bunch were two packs of 9" sluggos and 9" Yum dingers. Any body use these for muskies or
should I put them back for a possible striper trip? Roger London

I have the large Sluggos, don't know how big they are...Anyway,years,like 10 or so ago I used to use them.I would find the thickest, nastiest weeds and work em slow, just above the cover.I never caught a fish on them but I did try.I have been meaning to break them out again, maybe this year.To make them dance, you must go SLOW,light leader too. They looked good to me...

I have caught many fish on big sluggos, like stated in heavy cover but i work them erraticaly with a pause kind of like a agressive glider. I also work them in open water around structure and over submerged veg. The only downfall it with the single Sluggo hook up front many fish just get tail so I attatch a short stranded leader with a second hook to be attached to the back for open water. This hook can also be a trebel but when I am thowing in the slop, reeds or rice I just use the single hook.............Doug Bradley

Sluggos/Dingers are a great bait to use when fish are negative. I've had really good luck with them in light cover, and the slop alike. I use them as throwbacks in spring on a reservoir I fish a lot, and they do a good job of that. I also use them as a deeper bait, somewhat like a jig, pop a couple nail weights in them. best luck I've had deep with them is just using a slow rise, and letting it fall back. Almost like you'd work a jig, only never letting it hit bottom, and not ever really letting it rest.

Do you use a standard style leader or go with wire straight to the hook, minus all
the usual hardware like swivels and snaps? Seems these things might kill a
sluggo's action. I would also think a drop down to heavy bass tackle might be in
order for easier casting.

A old In-Fisherman video shows them using sluggos sight fishing pre spawn Muskies.

I use them in heavy cover, and do well. Work them as advised above, and when a Muskie hits the lure (one will, if you fish them in 'muskie used' heavy cover) give it a 4 count before you set the hook.

I use them alot in november sight fishing. Fish will eat the bait almost every time but Have never out, of probably 30 hooksets got one in the boat. I tinkered with it but couldnt get a hookset with sever different rigs. Great bait. Neutral fish will suck em in and active fish will really suck em in. I compare it with fluke fishing for smallmouths. Be prepared, your going to loose alot of fish.... Look at the swich over from hard and soft jerkbaits for smallmouth. One week we catch our fish on hard jerks then you cant by a fish on a hard jerk and they smack a soft. I noticed the same with muskie.

I also saw that old In-Fisherman show, they were in CA way early season. I thought they were after pike, though. Anyway, it was the only bait that worked for them, and man they caught some nice fish.
