I havnt used a full size board but I have seen guys use the mini orange ones. I bought 2 this summer and I do plan on using them this fall. I'm a liittle concerned about the hook set, but I'll worry about that after the fact. Last fall I saw 2 older gentleman in a 14' boat with 2 mini boards out each side and 2 slip bobbers out the back slow row trolling. They would sit in a spot for about ten minutes then slow row about 50 yards and sit again. I'm guessing from the looks of the set-up they new what they were doing, not to mention atleast $30.00 worth of meat hangin from the boat.

I wonder if you change out the clips so that they are both release clips set pretty light so that you wouldn't have to fight with the board still attached. Also may a smaller yello bird with the sucker only 2-3- feet behind. Let me know how you do. Where do fish most local or up north

Haven't tried boards and suckers yet, but know some who have. The guys I know rig an Offshore with a light front and rear clip, line barely into the clips, so a quick rip will detach the board before hookset.

Duck opener in t-minus 100 minutes. Hunting from the resort with widgeon all over the place. Kinda like the 9am opener!

i did an article some time ago in musky hunter on live baiting and included a segmant on planer boards.
typically i use them alot to work real steep edges like along rock walls (boated 2 yesterday on this pattern)though they can be used on a short line over the tops of submergent weeds or out over the deeper water at your back if you casting shallow.
i find it best to clip them so they don't release so you can work and jiggle the occasional hangup free or you are constantly chasing boards down.
move 10-20' and pause to let the bait work and go back down when you can what ever move very slow,,use 2x the amount of line as the depth with a lively sucker and little or no weight so get some depth and also so they can't pull the board under and just go to the board when you get a hit and take it off (sometimes this can be exciting if they are moving cause you got to move about the same speed as they are while you are releasing the board), then set them up going away no more than 45 degree angle at about 30' away and let it rip.

Herbie,

Couldn't have said it better myself...LOL...I have tried to "be like Herbie" when it comes to muskie fishing...and, have actually caught a couple of muskies on boards over the years becuz you taught me how to do it right. With the bait being tight to structure and far from the boat, I think there is an outside chance at a REAL HEAVY!!!!

Thanks again for your great mentoring!!

These are the best for livebaiting, good spread in very low speed.
