I've been thinking about getting a new boat and motor, but am a little cautious about the fact that alot of the 4 strokes have been makeing oil....anyone found a fix for it yet?? My dad got a new boat and motor back in the spring and has had to change the oil in it every 3 or 4 weeks......his is a Yamaha 60/40 jet.........I'm looking at the same motor.

I have not had any such issues...but I have a Merc....everybody loves to rip on them but I have been very pleased with mine.

It is two years old and I have changed the oil twice. 90HP EFI 4 stroke.

There were some Yamaha 100/115 HP 4 strokes that reportedly had this problem. Improper break in, too cold of thermostat, hard rings, and improper cylinder finish contributed to fuel blowing by the rings, and diluting the oil. Also, if the motor oil wasn't drained properly when changing, some was left in the crankcase, and that also made it appear these motors were making oil.

I believe changing the thermostat to a warmer one helped. Evidentally, the problem has been solved, because I've not heard of this in the last two model years.
