I posted a week ago regarding if you could only have one lure what would it be. A lot of responses came back Slammers. I was wondering what is the difference between Slammers, Jakes and ShallowRaiders. Why would you choose one over the other and what sizes and colors do you find best.

Its really personal taste.

If folks want a fantastic bait that twitches in and out of the weeds and timber. They have good side to side and great finishes that give good flash. The 7" and 8" twitch down to 7 feet and the 5" and 6" twitch 3ft. The new straight minnow bait Slammers troll very well too. If that is what you want want then a Slammer is your choice.

If you want a classic big twitch bait that has a slow rise, wide twitch and trolls very well and fast then a Jake is your option.

The Shallow raider is a great bait for the slow twitching. I use them in the fall and have done well. It does not have as much side to side wild action but it does catch fish.

To answer your question, every bait has its situation and purpose. I own all three of them and have caught fish on all of them. I really comes down to personal preference on the body of water you fish.

Just buy all three in the same size and see for yourself what you prefer.

Slammer has a few options which the others don't have. They have NEW deep diver options of 5", 6", 7", 10", and 12". These options cast down to 20', and troll down past 35', depending upon line diameter, speed, amount of line out to the bait, and of course interference from muskies trying to eat the bait!

Dave,

The lips and body shapes are what sets each apart. Each of them has a unique look in the water when straight retrieving, trolling or twitching. All are very durable and high quality baits. The nice thing is there are different sizes that you can use to your advantage and have as part of your arsenal.

Jakes - two sizes. The big one is great for crashing rock bars. The smaller one is great for trolling and casting structure edges and popping.

Shallow Raider - one size - jointed or straight model. Great for straight retrieving, trolling and twitching.

Slammers - all kinds of options here - deep and shallow. Check out www.slammertackle.com
I was lucky enough to pop a 45" fish on a 7" Perch Slammer on Saturday of the PMTT Invitational Championship on Pewaukee Lake - power twitching it over deep weed pods. It followed three full figure eights before engulfing the bait. Awesome battle!

This is a touchy subject between my wife and I. My favorite twitch bait is the Jake and hers is the Slammer.

I think we have just about every color made in both baits which can be expensive. It's almost to the point that whenever I buy one Jake she has to buy a Slammer too. We seem to catch the same amount of fish on both baits except she does seem to catch the larger Muskies.

One thing to consider though is if you like rattles, the Jakes do have them and Slammers do not. The Slammers do seem to be more resistant to bad cast made my fishermen who have been known to knock off lips of lures by hitting rocks and/or motor shrouds. (However, Maina Tackle will provide replacement lips at no cost!)

Remember, a big part of selecting a lure is the amount of CONFIDENCE you have in the lure. Pick one you like and go with it. I don't think you can go wrong with either bait.

Well, I have to add one more bullet to the arsenal. I rate Cranes right up there with the rest of them. The Crane however, has a tight wiggle with alot of fast vibration. The only weak part of the Crane is the lip. DO NOT use it around rocks!
Just bought a bunch of Slammers this year at the shows and can't wait to use them.
I've only caught 1 fish on a Jake so far, and it was short. I made sure to give Jakes a fair shot every time that I was out on the water. It's got a great wide wobble that looks very 'fishy' to me, but I can't get a fish on it.
Shallow Raiders I'm not too crazy about. I bought several, and only two of them tracked well right out of the box. Even after tuning, I'm not too crazy about their action.

I agree with Beav. Cranes are great baits too. I have a lot of them. Perch has been my best color other than my own modified clack-tails. I have the best luck twitching them.

One thing in our boat that has produced well when using cranks such as shallow raider, slammers, and jakes is to reel them in as slow as possible. For some reason this attracts active fish when things are rolling and unactive fish when you can't get much action. Make sure the bait is still under water and also make sure the wobble on the crank is very wide.

I agree with jason, too. The three all have a honored place in my arsenal.[:sun:]

Bill from Slammer built a Purple Haze bait for me this year, so THAT one will get alot of time!![]
