| I just purchased a tuffy esox 1700c with a 90 optimax, can I troll with this motor or will it load up on me? The salesman said that it should be fine trolling for muskies, what do you all think? And, if I do decide to get a kicker to go on the boat, would a 6hp be enough? Mercury is selling the 6hp for the price of the 4 right now and I am already pushing my budget, plus I would like to keep the overall weight of the boat down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

| You'll be fine trolling with the 90 hp motor alone. No need to add the expense and weight of the 6hp motor. Save your money. |

| I have a 135 OptiMax and I troll all day long.
Great motor and you never have to worry about it loading up.
Pretty much bullit proof.

Location: Hayward, WI | If you have already or add a Smartcraft gague you can set your trolling speed by RPM or speed right on the gauge, works really nice. Just set the speed or RPM push a button and it keeps you at that setting. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | I think they mean fouling of the plug's because of too rich of a mixture at idle/low RPM's. If that's a problem you need to get a dealer tune up. I've trolled all day long in Canada chasing walleyes with my Skeeter & big Johnson (harr, harrr, harrr) 150GT- circa 1989 2 stroke. No problems.
Hard to get real slow, if that's an issue, just throw out the drift sock or like my buddy Bob did one year with his Tracker, tow a 5 gallon bucket ~ 2 feet behind the prop.

I troll allot with my run-about (mercruiser I/O 120) and I have a problem with the plugs fouling after I have been running idle for a long time. Sometimes the engine will miss or not run well until I can get up to speed and prun the plugs at running speed for a few minutes. I was thinking my idle adjust is too rich but am not sure. It may be that the merc just isn't made to run at idle for long periods of time.

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | AFChief- Fouling is not normal, the mixture could be to rich-but also maybe they're the wrong heat range or, the timing is off at low rpm. I'd talk to Merc Marine dealer/mechanic.
When I first got my Skeeter (used-maybe that's why he wanted to sell) the plug's were continually fouling, after about 4 sets of plugs. On one trip to Grindstone I couldn't even get away from the launch dock- without changing the plugs. I took it into the local Johnson dealer for a factory tune up- she's been running like champ since- Now I have 24 spare spark plug's!
