I have the stuff I need to fish, but wonder what you feel is the most important item you can have in the boat other than the net, rod, reel, release stuff and lures. Wonder what I'm missing.

A quality sonar unit, with GPS if you can afford it. I would prefer to have GPS and not use it, than not have it and need it.

Knipex and a first aid kit.

You WILL wind up with a hook stuck somewhere in your body, and if you can't cut it, take it out, and stop the bleeding, your day will be over.

I'd also suggest a backup rod and reel if you only have one. I'm very anal, I have backup backups, I have extra's of my favorite lures, extra hook cutters, extra pliers, spare hooks, spare snaps leaders, split rings, spare spool of line... It's crazy but I just don't want to take the chance of having to stop fishing because something broke, or stop using a lure because I had to cut the hooks off.

Other things to consider:

1. If you don't have rain gear, buy some. Nothing worse than being cold and wet and having 6 hours left to fish.

2. Sunscreen.

Only one thing worse than realizing you're getting burnt to a crisp and it's not even noon, and that's #1

3. Extra hat

Ok that seems stupid, but I don't have a lot of hair left, so an extra hat is IMPORTANT

4. Polarized sunglasses

If you can't see the fish, you're not only missing half the fun, but it makes it very difficult to catch them. Helps to see what you're casting at

5. Small crochet hook

You will get backlashes. EVERYBODY gets backlashes, and sometimes they're HUGE. Anything that helps pull them out so you can get back to fishing is an important tool to have.

6. Camera

7. Insect repellant

Mosquitos suck, but nothing like those $%#^ing flies that like feet. Those things will have you freaking doing the one legged peepee dance in the boat swearing your head off and completely unable to fish. You think it's funny, but I'm not kidding.

8. Keep a spare pair of shoes and socks in the boat or in your truck. Wet soggy feet suck.

Pliers, pliers, pliers.
LONG needle nose plier, hook cutter/bolt cutter. Knipnex.
a GOOD net.. a coated net...not a $15 walmart net.

I'd second the vote for good electronics. Being able to quickly understand the bottom contours of a new lake or find specific spots on a previously fished lake, make fishing a lot easier. I know a specifc spot on a hump in the middle of Cedar Lake that always holds fish. Big fish too. But I always have a devil of a time finding it.

Humminbird's new side imaging technology is really fantastic for understanding a new lake. Getting the latest depth finder with side imaging technology and GPS is just one of the reasons that I'm using to justify getting a new boat.

Hope that helps...
