| Well, in an effort to get my boat in top shape for the spring bite I decided to get all new batteries. I did my research on the batteries and got them delivered today. I bought new trays for the batteries and everything needed to really not have to worry about replacing the batteries for a few years. I even cleaned all the connections to ensure the highest operational efficiency. Well, in the process of taking the 2nd trolling motor battery out, using a plyers to loosen the nut, I arched the 2 batteries and about messed my pants. My question is, did I hurt anything when this happened? The only thing I have hooked up to the 24volt batteries are the trolling motor and the automatic charger. I checked the trolling motor and it SEEMS to work fine. And I plugged in the automatic charger and it appears to be charging the new batteries. Thanks in advance for you help. Niel | |||

The ring touched the other terminal and, did you know gold is a very good conductor, the ring got smokin' hot. I couldn't get it off fast enough.. It left a nice circular blister all the way around my finger. You only do stuff like that once.

Location: Minneapolis, MN | A few years back when I was measuring the old batteries to see if I could squeeze in a bigger battery, the metal tape measure touched both terminals. What a light show! It burned a big nickle size chuck out of the tape measure. The batteries operated fine after that.

| The batteries are charged so they can discharge. Sometimes they discharge faster than other times. | |||

I have seen batteries physically explode from exactly the same scenario. Electrical tape wrapped around the plier handles or wrench to insulate them can prevent this from happening. Be especially careful if the batteries have just been recharged! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Al

| Thanks everyone, I will be sure to be even more careful next time. Seems as if the automatic charger is still working as well. Got lucky this time. See ya on the water, soon... Niel | |||

Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | Lowerider, I did exactly the same thing a couple days ago. Was filling batts and cleaning leads and when I went to tighten the wing nut with pliers I wasn't paying attention and arced 'em. Got a nice shower of sparks and burn mark on the pliers. Lucky me... no harm and everything is working fine. Now if I'd only paid attention: I hooked up batts in parallel and need to reconnect them in series. Lesson learned
