Posts: 120 | I'm going to start trying to troll and I was wondering if the Tekota 601s were a good reel. I'm left handed, which I know can make it a bit tough to find good trolling reels. I've heard a lot of good things about the old ones, but not much about the new ones. I plan to troll some mattlock/headlock 8fives and maybe 10-12 inch headlocks/mattlocks in addition to some jakes/grandmas. I may get a liplock potentially, too. Do you guys think the Tekota 601s are good enough, or should I get something else?

Posts: 1262 Location: Walker, MN | They are built very well, but the gearing is too fast for big crankbaits imo. They pick up 38 inches of line per turn. The old ones were much better. I prefer the Okuma Coldwaters. The drags are smooth and they pick up 24 inches per turn.

Posts: 1744 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I wouldn’t run anything else but tekota reels after using them. I actually appreciate the high speed for clearing lines when there is a fish on. Yes there is more drag, but it isn’t that drastic. If you can pull double 10’s on a 400/500HG, you can reel in a headlock with a tekota HG…

Posts: 120 | Is the Tekota HG the Tekota 601? And do you think it could handle the bigger crankbaits if I decide to use them (the 15 inch liplock, 13 inch grandmas, etc.)

I have the Okuma Coldwater for trolling. Biggest lure has been a 12" Headlock with a large planer board. Worked well.

Posts: 754 | Having owned both the older and newer style Tekota's I do not see any issue with the higher gear ration on the newer ones; even trolling 14 inch or larger baits, super-models... whatever.... The only time I could see it being annoying is if you are trolling a weed field and constantly clearing lines. They new ones are completely sealed up and built like a tank. I would not look anywhere else for a trolling reel if I needed more...

Why would the line per turn matter if you're trolling? Reeling in large lures or in-line planer boards while the boat is moving is a real chore. Lower gear/more power makes checking/clearing lines a breeze.
