Posts: 26 Location: Carol Stream, IL | Hey guys, Just wondering whether you prefer to fish muskie tournaments that have mulitple judge boats on the lake, or tournaments where you just have to have another tournament pariticipant witness your fish? Also, what do you think are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Luke S

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I enjoy fishing tournaments, both with judge boats and without. There are +'s and -'s to both style of tourneys, I don't see any big reasons why one is better than the other. I have been part of tourneys when getting a judge boat is almost impossible. Judges don't know where they are at on the lake and go flying by people, etc. Having others witness the catch and measurement is good, if the people around you want to pull up lines and come over. Some people get mad that you just boated a fish and won't stop by. On transport tourneys I have mixed feelings, but do fish in them as well. As long as the tourneys are run right, and have a good set of guidelines, I don't see one being any better than the other.

My preference is for tourneys with No live bait and No Trolling. Judge Boats are the best thing to use in my opinion.

You know I have fished both types (both kind are held on Shelbyville) and each have their advantages/disadvantages. During the Directors tourney (judge boat) a contestant almost didn't get a fish measured because he was waaaaaay back in a no wake zone. The judge took quite a while to get back there as he was close to the main lake. Fish was held in a holding pen style muskie net rather than the cradles the DNR hands out. I doubt the fish would have had a chance if it had been held in the cradle. During the IMTT championship (witness tourney) my partner and I came extremely close to letting our fish go because a) there was no one visible to witness and b) even though we had radios one of the other contestants who was on the move and close got confused as to our exact location. All in all I prefer the judge boat tourneys but with both types a contestant must realize that there IS a definite possibility that they may not get a fish measured without harm to the fish and have to let it go. Also realize that neither of these tourneys have been big money tourneys either. That could change the picture entirely but I think the PMTT (judge boat) does a great job for a big money type tourney. You are in a very exclusive part of our membership. Congrats! Lou is working on getting the pic up on the website and the same pic is also in the club yearbook.

Posts: 5874 | Depends on the money involved. Trophy and Bragging right tourneys, witness or honor system is ok. Money on the line? Gotta be officially witnessed. Transport or judge boat, makes no difference, as you can do either in each. Trolling, no problem with that. Live bait? heck. Why not? Edited by Shep 2/11/2004 2:04 PM

Posts: 26 Location: Carol Stream, IL | Hey Jay! I'm doing great. I am enjoying being up here but I still really miss being back down there with you guys! Be and sure and let me know if you ever need a partner for any of the IMTT tourneys or just a fun day of fishing! I can't wait for the ice to melt so I can get out and start casting again. I'm going back to Vermilion this summer to try and get another 50+ (although I likely used up all my luck last year). Luke S
