Posts: 462 Location: Syracuse, Indiana | I will be making my first trip to the Northwest Angle of LOTW this July. Home is Indiana. I assume I'll travel through Duluth. What is the best route? 1. Via 2 to Grand Rapids then cross country? 2. Via 53 to International Falls, then 11? 3. Some way I haven't figured out? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Posts: 58 Location: Oak Island, MN | The Grand Rapids route. Stay on Rt 2 to Rt 46 (Deer River) take a few jogs at Northome(see map), then come up Rt 72 to Baudette. Then west on Hwy 11 to Warroad.

Posts: 15 | I too am heading to the angle, but I will be coming from Sioux Lookout. Any and all tips are welcome. What type of border situation are we facing? We are American citizens so who knows? Anyone who may have made this trip(feel free to pipe up canucks) any idea of route, miles, time would be hugely appreciated.

Posts: 462 Location: Syracuse, Indiana | Thanks for the info, guys. I know the road from Duluth to IFalls farly well - good road including an hour or so of 4 lane. However, that route appears to be about 40 miles longer. I also have not seen too much police protection on that highway, whereas last year a buddy of mine got to speak about speed laws with one of Minnesota's Finest near Deer River. Certainly no one on this board condones speeding, but given the extended 4-lane on Hwy 53 (as compared to Hwy 2), I am surprised there is no one arguing about routes. Apparently my math is wrong (or my map reading ability). Thank you again for the information.

| Another option to consider if you want to avoid those hills south of and around the Duluth area is to take 94 to the Twin Cities. 694 to 35E to 35 then 35 to Moose Lake and 73 to Floodwood where you pick up Rt 2. This route is actually longer mileage wise than the Duluth route but faster if you can time your arrival in the Twin Cities to avoid rush hour. Also Thorne Bros is only a short detour on your way. | |||

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | I don't think that the Canadian Imigration folks are any different here than any other crossing. If they happen to ask it can be a problem. If they ask be sure to tell the truth. It doesnt hurt to do a little checking with the Canadian folks ahead of time. Doug Johnson
