I'm planning on getting a penn warfare 20 levelwind for live chubs/small suckers. I will more than likely be fishing a single hook rig because I'm using small live bait. I have my eye on a big cat fever MH rod, any other recommendations for a cheap rod?

Not sure your definition of cheap, but I think reasonably priced is the Chaos Tackle Assault Trolling/Live Bait Rod ($120 plus $15.95 shipping) at Team Rhino.

I picked one up this winter and looking forward to using it later this season

Berkeley Big Game rod at Walmart 22 bucks. Works great. Seeing you are using small live bait with a circle hook you are not setting the book so you don't need a pool que. If you have a spare rod laying around use it. If you go with a quick strike rig then get the heaviest BPS power plus boat rod, that's a pool que for 29 bucks.

Walmart also has a heavy catfish rod that would work well for your technique and not very expensive. Have a relative that fishes for cats and uses 8 to 10 inch suckers, uses the Walmart rod with good success. He regularly catches cats in the 30 pound range.

I prefer cork over EVA, but If EVA is what is cheap I'll just buy some grip lizard skin and wrap it right up!

What todd and north of 8 said, but also throw in some of the shakespeare ugly stick models. The 6'06" heavy gx2 looks interesting, as some of the tiger line up. Kdawg

i use ugly stik catfish rods. they are $40, but they have single piece stainless guides. i use them for trolling and live bait rods. being that they are glass, they can handle cold and the pounding of trolling well also. ive landed sturgeon on them and stung some nasty logs while moving at 5mph and they just keep on going.

I loved the old ugly stick commercials where the wife would try to break them ??. Durable rods for sure, I bought one of the older versions back in 07 as an all around rod and actually had my first tussle with a muskie on it. Unfortunately that only lasted about 6 seconds ??. That rod with 14lb mono just wasn't sturdy enough to set the hook. But with braid it would. Still have it now, put some 20lb braid on it and was tossing ultralight musky baits with it this year. Lures under 3/4 oz. Was able to actually get some distance with it. If you can find them anymore they we're only $40. Works great as a live bait and catfish rod. Even caught quite a few trout on it when I fished for them. Many positive things about that style glass as long as you use braid. They are definitely a cheap and viable option. Happy hunting
